Nakafurano Hokuseiyama Lavender Garden

4.3 (947)ParkPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Hokuseiyama Lavender Garden stands as the symbol of Nakafurano Town in Hokkaido, transforming between seasons as both a flower-filled hillside park and a winter ski resort. The municipal lavender field occupies the slopes of Mount Hokuseiyama, creating a seasonal spectacle from mid-July to early August when the ski slopes are covered in blooming lavender. The garden represents Nakafurano's identity as a lavender destination within the broader Furano region, which has become synonymous with Hokkaido's flower tourism.

The garden showcases four distinct varieties of lavender alongside sunflowers and salvia, with a rare white lavender blooming near the summit. The hillside location provides sweeping views of the Tokachidake mountain range, with the agricultural landscape of Furano Basin spreading below. The garden blooms with colorful flowers from summer and hosts the Nakafurano Lavender Festival, the town's largest annual event, in mid-July.

Visitors can ride a single-chair lift to the summit, a journey taking five and a half minutes that offers the sensation of floating above a carpet of flowers. Entry to the lavender fields is free of charge, making it accessible for budget-conscious travelers. The chair lift provides an efficient way to access the hilltop views, and walking trails are available for those who prefer to explore on foot. The site remains open year-round with free access to the Hokusei Mountain Observatory.

For drivers using navigation systems, enter the phone number 0167-44-3939 to reach the location. The site offers 50 parking spaces during summer, with additional parking available at the adjacent Flower Park. Summer lift tickets cost ¥400 for adults (high school students and older) and ¥200 for children (primary and middle school students), with preschoolers riding free of charge. Group discounts apply for parties of 11 or more. The garden is accessible from Sapporo via the Hokkaido Expressway, with Nakafurano situated in the Furano Basin area of central Hokkaido.

What other travelers are saying about Nakafurano Hokuseiyama Lavender Garden

My wife and I arrived at the lavender field on one evening in July but the sun setting behind the hill had cast the entire field in shadows. The vibrant colours of flowers were subdued. So, we left and returned early the next morning. This time, the flower fields were lit under a clear blue sky. We were so early that our rental car was the only vehicle in the car park. There was no crowd and we almost enjoyed the flower fields to ourselves! The flowers were beautiful in the early morning light without strong sunlight and contrast. Some of the flowering plants have not fully grown in their plots, and the earth is visible between the plants. Notwithstanding, it was still a beautiful sight.

Nakafurano Hokuseiyama Lavender Fields is one of the most beautiful spots to see lavender in Furano. The fields cover the hillside of Mt. Hokusei, turning bright purple in July, with great views of the valley and distant mountains. You can walk up or take the lift for a relaxing ride and enjoy the scenery from above. Entrance is free, parking is easy, and you can even try lavender soft cream while enjoying the fresh scent of flowers. A perfect summer stop in Hokkaido.
This was the first lavender farm I’d been to in Japan. This one is in Naka-Furano. We followed the pathway painted purple from the train station to the farm…very easy. We paid 700 yen to go up and down on the chairlift. At the top, there are photo spots. We enjoyed our time at this small farm.
Beautiful flowers! Great place to chill since it's not crowded. The chair lift ride to the observation deck was fun 😁
