Lake Shōji is the smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes, located in Yamanashi Prefecture at the northern base of Mount Fuji. With a surface area of just 0.5 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 15 meters, it remains the most tranquil and least commercialized of the five lakes surrounding Japan's iconic mountain. The lake sits at an elevation of 900 meters above sea level and was formed by volcanic activity from Mount Fuji thousands of years ago.

The lake gained international recognition when it appeared on the reverse side of the 1,000 yen banknote issued between 1984 and 2004, featuring the famous "Inverted Fuji" view where Mount Fuji's reflection appears perfectly mirrored on the lake's surface. This particular view is best observed from the northern shore during calm, clear mornings in spring and autumn. The lake has long attracted photographers and artists seeking to capture Mount Fuji's serene beauty, and the Shōji Panorama Viewpoint, accessible via a short hiking trail, offers sweeping vistas of both the lake and the mountain.

Visitors to Lake Shōji can explore the quiet shoreline on foot, rent kayaks and canoes during warmer months, or try their hand at fishing for black bass and rainbow trout. The lake is encircled by walking paths and is particularly popular during the autumn foliage season when surrounding forests display vibrant colors. Winter brings a stark, peaceful atmosphere with occasional views of snow-capped Mount Fuji rising above the frozen landscape. Several lakeside campgrounds provide overnight accommodation for those wishing to experience the area's natural tranquility.

The lake is accessible by bus from Kawaguchiko Station, with services running regularly and taking approximately 30 minutes. From Tokyo, visitors typically take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, then transfer to the Fuji Kyuko Line to reach Kawaguchiko Station, with total travel time around 2.5 hours. There is no admission fee to visit the lake or its surrounding public areas, though specific activities like boat rentals and campground stays require separate payment.

Traveler reviews

We stayed at a hotel by the lake, so we got to enjoy the view both in the evening and in the morning, and it was stunning each time. It was so peaceful and beautiful, and I’d say Lake Shoji is a hidden gem; quiet, picturesque, and a wonderful place to experience Mount Fuji away from the crowds.

This is the most peaceful and least crowded of the Fuji Five Lakes. It's a dream for nature lovers and photographers! Sunrise is truly magical here, often giving you the perfect 'Inverted Fuji' reflection. We noticed many local Japanese couples taking beautiful, romantic photos to capture their precious moments. A truly perfect, quiet escape!
This lake is the smallest among the Fuji Mountain five lakes but the now is astonishing with the surrounding mountains and lake areas. It’s quite peaceful and calming since it’s less commercialized.
