4.1 (4922)Performing Arts TheaterEvent VenuePoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Meijiza Theatre stands in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district as one of Japan's most distinguished traditional performance venues. Originally established in 1873 during the Meiji era, this historic theater has served as a cornerstone of Japanese performing arts for over a century. The current building, reconstructed in 1993, preserves the architectural elegance of the original while incorporating modern facilities, maintaining its status as a premier destination for experiencing authentic Japanese theater.

The venue holds particular cultural significance as a showcase for traditional Japanese performing arts, regularly hosting kabuki performances alongside other classical forms such as ningyo joruri (traditional puppet theater) and contemporary Japanese drama. Unlike some theaters that cater primarily to tourists, Meijiza maintains its role as a working theater where serious practitioners and enthusiasts gather, offering visitors an opportunity to witness performances in an atmosphere valued by Japanese audiences themselves.

Visitors to Meijiza can expect full-length traditional performances that typically run several hours, with many productions featuring renowned actors from prestigious kabuki families. The theater provides English audio guides and subtitle screens for select performances, making the experience accessible to international visitors unfamiliar with Japanese language or theatrical conventions. The interior features classic theater architecture with multiple seating levels, and the venue occasionally offers backstage tours that provide insight into the preparation and traditions behind Japanese theater.

The theater is located in Nihonbashi Hamacho, approximately a three-minute walk from Hamacho Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line or about seven minutes from Ningyocho Station on the Toei Asakusa Line and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. Ticket prices vary significantly depending on the production and seating location, generally ranging from approximately ¥4,000 to ¥20,000.

We were unfortunately 20 mins late due to severe accidents on the train track, were asked to wait inside lobby for a while but was able to watch live stream from a laptop; Then the staff was kind to lead us to our seats. Our seats are on 3rd floor it is still quite clear and full visibility; but if you want to look at their facial features it is not close enough. All staff are kind and nice, overall a great experience.

The closest station is Hamacho station, but I recommend you to use Ningyocho station. You can enjoy old town atmosphere such as local good-old restaurants and traditional shrines.
