The Mitsuke English Garden is a 12-hectare landscaped garden located in Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 1992, the garden was designed to commemorate the sister city relationship between Mitsuke and Leighton-Linslade in England. The design draws inspiration from traditional English landscape gardening principles, featuring naturalistic plantings, water features, and architectural elements that evoke the pastoral countryside of England.

The garden represents a cultural bridge between Japan and England, showcasing English horticultural traditions adapted to Niigata's climate and geography. Its significance lies in its role as one of the few authentic English-style gardens in the Hokuriku region, offering visitors an immersive experience of Western garden design without leaving Japan. The garden features distinct seasonal displays, with spring bulbs, summer perennials, autumn foliage, and winter structural plantings providing year-round interest.

Visitors can explore winding pathways that lead through diverse garden rooms, including rose gardens, herbaceous borders, and woodland areas. The garden includes a Victorian-style greenhouse filled with tropical and subtropical plants, a canal with boat rides during warmer months, and several gazebos and benches positioned to capture scenic views. A British-style manor house serves as an event space and restaurant where visitors can enjoy afternoon tea and English-inspired cuisine. The garden regularly hosts seasonal events, including rose festivals and illumination displays.

The Mitsuke English Garden is located approximately 3 kilometers from Mitsuke Station on the JR Echigo Line. Visitors can reach the garden by taxi in about 10 minutes from the station, or by local bus with services connecting to the garden entrance. For those driving, the garden is accessible from the Hokuriku Expressway via the Mitsuke Interchange, approximately 5 minutes away. Admission fees apply, with discounts available for groups, children, and senior citizens. The garden's relatively remote location makes it a peaceful destination away from major tourist routes, ideal for visitors seeking a tranquil escape.

Traveler reviews

I visited there yesterday and I was sad because it is not season of the roses to bloom anymore so their were no beautiful roses. The flowers that are in bloom are so few but its okay, it's still a nice place to visit to date or to have bonding moments with love ones. It would be more beautiful when all the flowers are in full bloom. It's admission is free too. It's hot season so don't forget to have some soft ice cream at their cafe near 😊.
