Motomachi Church

The Catholic Motomachi Church stands as one of Hakodate's most recognizable landmarks, its distinctive Gothic Revival architecture crowned by a striking green spire that has dominated the city's skyline since 1924. The church represents the third iteration of Catholic worship on this site, with the original structure built in 1877 making it one of Japan's oldest Catholic churches. The current building, reconstructed after a devastating fire, features elegant white stucco walls and soaring arched windows that exemplify European ecclesiastical design adapted to a Japanese setting.

Located in Hakodate's historic Motomachi district on the slopes of Mount Hakodate, the church holds significant cultural importance as part of the city's concentration of Western-style architecture dating from the port's opening to international trade in 1859. The building's 33-meter tall bell tower serves as a navigation point visible from much of the harbor area. The interior preserves original stained glass windows and religious artifacts imported from Europe, offering visitors a glimpse into the early Catholic missionary presence in Hokkaido.

The church is located approximately 2 kilometers from JR Hakodate Station. Visitors can take the Hakodate City Tram to Jujigai Station, followed by a 10-minute uphill walk through the historic district. Alternatively, buses serving the Motomachi area stop within 5 minutes' walking distance. Entry to the church grounds is free, though donations are appreciated.
