Mount Shosha Ropeway, Himeji

The Mount Shosha Ropeway opened in 1958 and serves as the primary access route to one of Japan's most cinematically famous temple complexes. Shoshazan Engyoji Temple was founded by Shoku Shonin in 966, establishing over 1,000 years of Buddhist heritage atop the forested mountain. The ropeway eliminates the challenging hour-long hike, transporting visitors directly to the sacred grounds that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Mount Shosha gained international recognition as a filming location for "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise, as well as various Japanese historical dramas including the NHK Taiga Drama "Gunshi Kanbei." The temple's cinematic appeal stems from its beautiful scenery and absence of modern infrastructure on the temple grounds, creating an authentic historical atmosphere that filmmakers prize. The complex is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and stunning wooden architecture, with traditional buildings scattered across the mountaintop.

Visitors experience both the scenic cable car journey and the extensive temple complex exploration. During autumn (November), the entire mountain transforms with red, yellow, and orange foliage, attracting numerous tourists. The temple grounds require 2-3 hours to explore fully, with opportunities for cultural immersion including zazen meditation and sutra copying experiences. A shuttle bus operates from the temple entrance to Maniden hall, taking approximately 5 minutes each way, while walking the same route requires about 20 minutes.

Take bus number 10 from Himeji Station North Exit or Himeji Castle to the terminal stop "Mount Shosha Ropeway" (30 minutes, 320 yen one way, every 20 minutes). The ropeway operates every 15 minutes, costing 700 yen one way or 1,200 yen round trip.
