Mt. Gassan

Mt. Gassan is a stratovolcano in Yamagata Prefecture standing at 1,984 meters above sea level, making it the highest of the Three Mountains of Dewa (Dewa Sanzan). The mountain has hosted pilgrimages for over a millennium since Prince Hachiko opened the Dewa Sanzan for worship in the 6th century AD, with pilgrimages becoming particularly popular during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The name Gassan literally means "Mountain of the Moon" and the mountain is dedicated to Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, the Shinto moon deity who presides over reincarnation and the afterlife.

In the traditional Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage, the three mountains represent a symbolic journey of reincarnation: Mt. Haguro represents the present, Mt. Gassan the past and the realm of the deceased, and Mt. Yudono the future. The Midagahara wetlands are named after Amitabha Buddha, who represents the world of the dead in Pure Land Buddhism. The summit hosts the Gassan Shrine, where visitors encounter mountain ascetics known as Yamabushi who can often be heard by their distinctive shell horn blasts before being seen.

The mountain has been selected as one of Japan's 100 greatest mountains for flowers, with visitors able to enjoy alpine plants and wonderful views along its gentle mountain ridge. The hiking trail passes through marshland, wild alpine flower fields, and patches of snow even in midsummer. From the summit, visitors can view the Shonai Plain, Mt. Chokai, the Asahi-Iide mountain range, and even distant Mt. Iwaki and Hachimantai. The area has been designated a special zone in Bandai-Asahi National Park. The famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho climbed Mt. Gassan and wrote about the experience during his travels.

The most popular route is the Ubasawa (Haguro) course on the mountain's south side, which takes approximately 3-4 hours to reach the summit from the 8th Station trailhead, with an elevation gain of 825 meters over 11.8 kilometers. For visitors not wishing to complete the full summit hike, a circular hiking course starting and ending at the 8th Station takes only about 30 minutes through marsh and flower fields. The shrine is accessible only from July 1st to October 31st due to heavy snowfall that makes the mountain inaccessible for much of the year.

Unlike most shrines in Japan, visitors must participate in a short purification rite at the Gassan Shrine entrance before entering, and photography is not allowed inside the shrine. The purification fee is 500 yen per person. Mountain cabins are available for overnight lodging at the 8th Station, 9th Station, and mountaintop, with advance reservations required. Mt. Gassan also features a unique ski resort at 1,600 meters elevation that operates from April to July, when most other Japanese ski resorts are closed. During May, skiers can experience the striking contrast of blue sky, white snow, and fresh green beech leaves.

From JR Yamagata Station, take an express bus approximately 40 minutes to Nishikawa bus stop, then a local bus another 45 minutes to Ubasawa. Alternatively, from JR Tsuruoka Station, take a bus bound for Gassan Hachigome (8th Station), which takes approximately 2 hours. Between July and September, Shonai Kotsu operates four bus round trips on selected days between Mt. Haguro's summit and Mt. Gassan's 8th Station (55 minutes, 1,590 yen one way). Parking is available at the 8th Station for those driving.
