Nabeshima Shoto Park, Shibuya

Nabeshima Shoto Park offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo's busiest entertainment district. The site served as a subordinate mansion of the Kishu Tokugawa family during the Edo period (1603-1867), functioning as a refuge for the clan's samurai and their retainers. After the Meiji Restoration, the Tokugawa clan relinquished the land to the Nabeshima family of Saga in 1876, who established a tea plantation on the property. The Nabeshima family's tea garden, known as "Shoto garden," gave the surrounding neighborhood its name.

The park centers around a historic pond that once belonged to the Tokugawa family, creating a serene atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the urban energy of nearby Shibuya Station. A tasteful watermill adds traditional charm to the landscape, and visitors can walk around the pond in approximately five minutes. The park sits between two cultural institutions, the Shoto Art Museum and Toguri Art Museum, in one of Tokyo's most exclusive residential areas. Cherry blossom season draws particularly large crowds to this compact green space.

A notable modern feature is the public restroom facility designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The design consists of five cedar board huts with louvers installed at random angles, creating a "toilet village" connected by pathways that blend into the park's lush greenery. This installation is part of The Tokyo Toilet project, which invited 16 international creators to redesign public facilities throughout Shibuya.

The park is approximately a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station. Visitors can also take the Tokyu Bus (渋55) to the "Todai-mae" bus stop, followed by a 6-minute walk. The park offers free admission and is open to the public year-round. Its quiet, residential setting provides an unexpected retreat just minutes from one of Tokyo's most famous transportation hubs.
