Established in 1959, the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market serves as Hokkaido's primary food distribution hub, supplying fresh products throughout Japan. Located in Sapporo City, the capital of Japan's northernmost prefecture, this bustling commercial center represents the gateway to Hokkaido's renowned culinary bounty, from premium seafood caught in the surrounding Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan to agricultural products grown across the island's vast farmlands.

The market's cultural significance extends beyond commerce, functioning as Sapporo's kitchen where professional buyers, restaurateurs, and food retailers converge each morning to source the finest ingredients. This daily ritual has made the facility a cornerstone of Hokkaido's food culture, directly connecting the region's natural abundance with dining tables across Japan. The market showcases Hokkaido's position as Japan's food paradise, highlighting the prefecture's role as the country's top producer of agricultural products and seafood.

Visitors can experience the market's energy through the adjacent Curb Market (Jogai Market), a retail area specifically designed for the general public. Opening at 6AM, this market offers direct access to the same fresh produce and seafood auctioned in the wholesale sections. The facility is divided into 10 blocks with about 60 stores specializing in Hokkaido delicacies including world-famous crab, sea urchin, salmon, and seasonal vegetables. Visitors can enjoy freshly prepared sashimi bowls, sushi, and other seafood dishes at market restaurants, providing an authentic taste of Japan's northern cuisine.

For those seeking deeper insight into wholesale operations, guided tours are available with designated courses visiting the seafood and fruit/vegetable areas, including an exhibition room that explains the market's functions and importance to Japan's food supply chain. However, note that the general public cannot visit or shop inside the main wholesale market without arranged tours.

Access is convenient via Sapporo's public transportation system, including buses and taxis from central Sapporo. The Curb Market operates with free admission for browsing, though individual purchases and dining require payment. Most vendors accept cash, and some accept cards, making it accessible for international visitors seeking authentic Hokkaido food experiences.

Auction only in the morning from 5am to 8am. After 6am most of the auction from fish market has been completed. Besides, you only can enjoy the auction from the view point on 2/F on saturday. If you have tight schedule, this can be skip.

Kaisendon, Soup Kani, Grilled Scallop, Grilled Welk, Grilled Tentacles and sweet honeydew. Been craving for my bowl of kaisendon for my Japanese since arriving Japan. And I finally got it at Sapporo Central Wholesale market. This was from one of the shops with restaurant sitting.

Came here as a tourist; they have a program (in Japanese) which is interesting, and while we didn’t get to see the fish auction (it ends early) we did get to see fruits/vegetables auction (around 7AM). The restaurants inside are simple but good (we saw only folks working in the market though that may be because today is a weekday). I’d highly recommend coming before 6 (5?) and registering to see the auction. (見学) We couldn’t go to the auction floor itself but there are shops around the wholesale market if you want to buy something.

This is the professional fresh fish auction, meant primarily for members (local businesses who buy fresh fish in bulk). Similar to other fish auctions in Japan, a limited number of tourists are apparently allowed to visit, but only by advance reservation.
