Nakatsu Gorge is located in Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan, and serves as one of the premier locations to experience the famous "Niyodo Blue" phenomenon. The gorge was formed over 300 million years ago through tectonic activity, creating a dramatic landscape along the Nakatsu River, which is a tributary of the renowned Niyodo River. The Niyodo River itself holds historical significance, being mentioned in the tenth-century Engishiki, an early compilation of Japanese laws and customs, as the source of special sweetfish offered as tribute to the Imperial Palace in Kyoto.

The gorge is considered sacred by locals and regarded as a spiritual "power spot" within Shinto tradition. Stone statues representing the Shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Fortune) are positioned throughout the gorge, and the Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo also appears among the stone scenery. The site forms part of the Niyodo Blue prefectural nature park, named for the distinctive crystalline azure color of the water that results from exceptional clarity and purity.

The main visitor experience centers on a 2.3-kilometer riverside path that follows the Nakatsu River, crossing via steppingstones and small bridges while weaving through massive moss-covered boulders. The trail culminates at Uryu no Taki waterfall, where water plunges 20 meters into vivid blue pools below. A traditional hanging rope marks the waterfall, symbolizing the division between the human world and spirit world according to Shinto belief. A complete round trip typically takes approximately one and a half hours.

The gorge entrance is a seven-minute walk from the bus stop. Limited parking is available directly at the entrance (three spaces), while the former Nanokawa Elementary School playground, located 100 meters before the gorge, offers approximately 30 parking spaces. Entry to the gorge is free of charge. Visitors should wear sturdy walking shoes as the paths include uneven surfaces, boulders, and steps that can become slippery when wet.

From Kochi City, the gorge is accessible by car in approximately one hour and 20 minutes, or about one hour and 40 minutes from Matsuyama. By public transport, visitors take the JR train from Kochi Station to Sakawa Station, then board the Kuroiwa sightseeing bus toward Kawado, getting off at Nanokawa bus stop after around 35 minutes.

Traveler reviews

It was nice even in the rain. There are three parking spots next to the toilet near the park entrance, otherwise it is a long walk from the car park - we were lucky and waited shortly for someone to leave It was about a 35 minute return trip from the parking lot outside the park to the waterfall

Very similar to Taroko in Taiwan, which unfortunately suffered heavy damage after the recent earthquakes. So, I was glad to find this place even though I visited in February, height of the dry season. Therefore it wasn't as majestic and deep in color, but the fact we did not meet any tourists for hours made it quite special. Plan very well if you don't drive. It's definitely doable as a day trip out if Kōchi , which i was a bit apprehensive of at the start

Stopped in at the Nakatsu Valley on the way from Kotchi to Matsuyama. Did the hike through the valley to Uryu Falls and very glad I did. Well worth the short hike. There is no cost to hiking the valley and plenty of free parking available as well.

Absolutely stunning location. The hike is worth every minute for the scenery you are surrounded by the whole way. Visited in mid summer and even though the general temperature was 37C, in the gorge with the river it was very cool and enjoyable. Pictures can never do this place justice. One of a kind.

Frequently Asked Questions

The gorge is accessible year-round, but the "Niyodo Blue" color appears most vivid from autumn to winter when air and water clarity is highest. Summer attracts visitors seeking cooler temperatures, while autumn offers striking foliage contrasts against the blue water. Midday visits in clear weather provide optimal conditions for viewing and photographing the distinctive water color.

The trail includes concrete sections, rocks, steps, and stairs, and takes approximately 10 minutes to reach Uryu Falls or up to 1.5 hours to explore the full accessible area. The paths are manageable for most fitness levels but require sturdy footwear due to uneven surfaces that become slippery when wet. The 2.3-kilometer route crosses streams via steppingstones and small bridges.

The trailhead has restrooms, a visitor center, and a small shop selling local goods. A restaurant called Ebisu Chaya operates at the entrance. No facilities exist along the trail itself. Parking is available at the entrance with 3 spaces or at the former Nanokawa Elementary School playground with approximately 30 spaces, located 100 meters before the gorge entrance.

Swimming is not prohibited, but visitors must be considerate of sightseers and aware that some areas have dangerous depths and fast currents, making swimming at your own risk. The gorge is primarily designated for nature observation and preservation rather than recreational water activities. Check posted signage for any specific restrictions.

Sturdy closed-toe shoes with good grip are essential due to slippery and uneven surfaces. Water and snacks are recommended for extended visits. Pets are permitted on leashes with proper waste disposal. Visitors must carry out all trash, and removing plants or stones from the prefectural park is prohibited.
