Natadera Temple, Komatsu

Natadera Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 673 CE during the Hakuho period, the temple was established by the monk Taicho, who also founded the sacred Mount Haku. The temple belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism and has served as an important religious site for over 1,300 years. The current main hall, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, was reconstructed in 1640.

The temple complex is renowned for its dramatic natural setting within a gorge of peculiarly shaped rocks and stones. The grounds feature remarkable rock formations created by centuries of erosion, including caves and overhangs that house Buddhist statues and carvings. The most significant is the Kigan Yusenkutsu Cave, where visitors can see ancient stone carvings of Buddhist deities. The temple's natural beauty changes with the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and particularly stunning autumn foliage that draws many visitors in November.

Visitors experience the temple by following a 1.2-kilometer walking path that winds through the forested gorge, passing various halls, shrines, and rock formations. The route includes stone steps and wooden walkways built into the cliffside, offering close encounters with the natural rock sculptures. Key structures along the path include the Hondo main hall, Gankutsu stone cave with Buddhist reliefs, and observation points overlooking the gorge. The walk typically takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace.

Natadera Temple is located approximately 30 minutes by bus from Komatsu Station on the JR Hokuriku Main Line. The Komatsu Station is accessible from Kanazawa in about 15 minutes by limited express train. Local buses bound for Natadera operate from the station, dropping visitors near the temple entrance. Admission to the temple grounds costs ¥600 for adults. The temple maintains a large free parking area for those traveling by car, positioned about 10 minutes' walk from the main entrance through a shopping street lined with local craft shops and restaurants.
