Nyu Hill Sunflower Field

The Nyu Hill Sunflower Field in Gunma Prefecture transforms into one of Japan's most spectacular summer landscapes each year. Located in the town of Kasukawa within Shibukawa City, this agricultural attraction began as a local initiative in the late 1990s to revitalize rural tourism and has since grown into a regional landmark drawing tens of thousands of visitors annually during peak bloom season.

Spanning approximately 12 hectares, the field features over 1.2 million sunflowers that typically reach full bloom from mid-July through early August, though exact timing varies with weather conditions. The sunflowers are planted in multiple varieties, creating a wave-like pattern of yellow blooms against the backdrop of Mount Akagi and the surrounding Gunma countryside. The site's elevated position at Nyu Hill provides panoramic views that make it particularly popular with photographers seeking dramatic landscape compositions.

Visitors can walk along designated pathways that wind through the towering stalks, some reaching heights of 2 meters or more. The field includes observation platforms positioned at strategic points to offer elevated viewing angles. Access requires a car in most cases, as the field lies approximately 20 minutes by vehicle from Shibukawa Station on the JR Joetsu Line. Limited shuttle bus services may operate during peak weekends, but schedules vary by year. On-site parking accommodates several hundred vehicles, though spaces fill quickly on weekends and holidays.
