Ogasawara Hahajima Tourism Association

4 (128)Tourist Information CenterTour AgencyTravel AgencyPoint Of InterestServiceEstablishment

The Ogasawara Hahajima Tourism Association serves as the primary information and coordination center for visitors to Hahajima Island, the second inhabited island in the Ogasawara archipelago. Located approximately 40 kilometers south of Chichijima, Hahajima is one of only two inhabited islands in the Ogasawara chain, which lies roughly 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. The association operates from Oki Port, where a tourist information desk assists visitors arriving by ferry.

The Ogasawara Islands were inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, with Hahajima Islands forming part of the protected area. The archipelago's isolation has fostered unique ecosystems with endemic animal and plant species found nowhere else on Earth. To safeguard this fragile environment, visitors must avoid importing seeds or alien species and refrain from collecting local flora and fauna. Whale watching in Japan began in the Ogasawara Islands, with specific regulations implemented in Hahajima from 1989.

Hahajima measures approximately 15 kilometers in length but only 2 to 3 kilometers in width. The island offers beaches, snorkeling, jungle trekking, and whale and dolphin watching. Notable hiking trails include the route to Mount Chibusa, the island's highest peak in the northern section, and a 2.5-kilometer trail to Mount Kofuji at the southern tip. Minamizaki Beach, accessible via offshoots from the main trail, offers exceptional snorkeling in clear blue water. The Kiyomigaoka karst region features a limestone cave that visitors can explore through the Hahajima Tourism Association.

Transport to Hahajima requires taking the Hahajima-maru Ferry from Chichijima Island, a two-hour journey costing approximately 6,000 yen one way. The ferry typically makes one daily round trip, departing in the morning and returning in the afternoon, though schedules vary based on the Ogasawara-maru's arrival from Tokyo. Tickets cannot be reserved and are sold about one hour before departure on the day of travel. The island has no public transportation system, but visitors can explore by foot, rental bicycle, scooter, or car. The village around Oki Port includes a JA bank with a postal ATM accepting international credit and debit cards, though dining options beyond accommodations remain limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hahajima is accessible only by the Hahajima-maru Ferry from Chichijima Island, located approximately 40 kilometers to the north. The journey takes about two hours and costs around 6,000 yen one way. Ferry tickets cannot be reserved in advance and are sold approximately one hour before departure on the day of travel. The ferry typically makes one daily round trip, departing in the morning and returning in the afternoon, though schedules vary when the Ogasawara-maru arrives from Tokyo. Note that the ferry does not operate the day after the Ogasawara-maru departs Tokyo.

The Hahajima Tourism Association operates a tourist information desk at Oki Port, where all ferries arrive. The association provides information on accommodations, guided tours, activities, and the island's environmental regulations. They can assist with booking pensions and lodgings, arranging nature tours, and explaining the strict rules for protecting Hahajima's UNESCO World Natural Heritage site status. The association also coordinates with local guides for whale watching, snorkeling, hiking, and cave exploration at the Kiyomigaoka karst region.

Due to Hahajima's status as part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, visitors must follow strict environmental protection rules. Camping and off-trail hiking are completely prohibited throughout the island to preserve the fragile ecosystem. Visitors must not import any seeds or alien species, and are prohibited from collecting or harming local plants and wildlife. Much of the island is restricted access to protect endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Visitors are encouraged to use human-powered transportation like walking or bicycles whenever possible.

Hahajima has limited accommodation options, primarily consisting of small family-run pensions and guesthouses located near Oki Port. The Tourism Association's website lists approximately 10 lodging facilities offering various styles, including individual rooms and dormitory-type accommodations. Some provide meals while others have kitchen facilities or offer no meal plans. Reservations must be made in advance, and securing accommodation before arrival is strongly advised due to limited capacity. The island has no luxury hotels, and only a handful of establishments accept credit cards, so visitors should bring sufficient cash.

Hahajima has minimal infrastructure befitting its remote location and small population. The island has three supermarkets that typically close around 18:00, offering basic groceries, drinks, and instant foods. Dining options outside of accommodations are very limited, with only two restaurants on the island. Banking services are available through a JA bank with a postal ATM at Oki Port that accepts international credit and debit cards. There is no public transportation system, so visitors explore on foot or by rental bicycle, scooter, or car. The island has no bars, clubs, or entertainment venues, maintaining its character as a peaceful, nature-focused destination.

The Tourism Association counter also sells the Hajima Maru's Imperial Ship Seal. There are other souvenirs available. The Hajima Maru ticket office is located in the same building. Tickets are not available for the general public on round trips between Chichijima and Hahajima, so you can buy your tickets here. Sales begin one hour before departure. You can also borrow umbrellas for free inside the building.

If you buy a climbing kit (not really a kit), you can get a certificate if you climb Mt. Chibusayama or Mt. Kofuji. I did it all on foot, stopping off at two peaks in one day, so it was pretty impressive. They also sell the Hahajima Maru's Imperial Ship Seal. Both are 300 yen.

It's not as flashy as Futami Port on Chichijima, but the people of the island will warmly welcome you back. I think most of the staff from the inn are there. There are not many people, so you'll always meet one or two people you've seen on the island before or who have helped you out, which is more moving than Futami Port.

I called the tourist association and asked Hayakawa-san to organize a half-day tour. If there's somewhere you want to go, let them know in advance and they'll organize a schedule to accommodate it. He knows everything about the natural environment of Hahajima's mountains, and even though it was a short trip, I was able to learn about its history and natural environment, making it a very fulfilling tour. He's so amazing that he can even attract Hahajima white-eyes by imitating their calls! Many of them gathered around. I think it's best to wear long sleeves and long pants. I brought lunch with me, and we were able to see the spectacular view from Hayakawa-san's farm and Hahajima white-eyes and Japanese white-eyes at the watering hole. Apparently, you can even spot whales sometimes. The Hahajima white-eye T-shirt and sticker from the tourist association's souvenir corner made great souvenirs. Next time I'd like to stay on Hahajima!
