What other travelers are saying about Oita Marine Palace Aquarium “Umitamago”
We visited the aquarium in the late afternoon and it was worth it. There were a minimum of visitors in the park and we happened to be participants in the sea lion feeding. It was an amazing experience for us. This huge and at the same time beautiful and respectful animal was absolutely perfect and cute. There are a number of amazing marine animals in the aquarium, but the feeding was a premiere for us, which is why I highlight it so much as an educator. If you are near the aquarium and do not know what to do, definitely visit it.
The aquarium operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM during normal hours, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Hours may vary during peak periods such as Golden Week and August, when the facility extends its operating times to accommodate more visitors. The aquarium closes for annual maintenance on December 4 and 5. Visitors should check the official website before planning their visit to confirm current operating hours, especially during holiday seasons.
Photography is generally allowed in most areas of Umitamago Aquarium for personal use. However, flash photography might be restricted in certain exhibits to protect the animals. Tripods and selfie sticks might be restricted in crowded areas or specific exhibits to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors and animals. A camera with good low-light performance is recommended for indoor exhibits, while the jellyfish displays and animal shows provide particularly excellent photo opportunities.
Yes, visitors can purchase a combined ticket that includes both Umitamago and the adjacent Takasakiyama Monkey Park. The Monkey Marine Ticket costs ¥3,300 and includes round-trip bus transportation from either Beppu or Oita Station plus admission to both facilities. The two attractions are connected by a footbridge, making it convenient to visit both locations in a single trip. This combination ticket offers good value for those planning to explore both the aquarium and the natural zoo.
The aquarium features multiple dining options for visitors. The Umitama Café Bee Honey serves marine animal-themed treats and is particularly famous for its honey-rich soft serve ice cream. The café features floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering stunning views of Beppu Bay. A food court on the first floor serves local cuisine including toriten (chicken tempura), set menus, and noodles. Both venues provide opportunities to rest and refuel while enjoying views or themed food items.
Umitamago emphasizes close animal encounters throughout the facility. The Fishing Pool on the second floor allows visitors to touch live sea creatures such as starfish and sea cucumbers. After the walrus performance, there is an interaction time where visitors can actually touch the walrus' body. The outdoor Asobeach facility allows visitors to enter a pool with white coral sand barefoot to observe dolphins swimming freely. The aquarium also offers behind-the-scenes tours providing access to operational areas normally closed to the public, giving visitors insight into aquarium management.
Was in Beppu, so decided to spend a day here. Nothing much other than the performances by the sea animals (walrus/seal) and dolphin. The entire area was pretty small and you can easily complete it in half a day. Like what the other reviewers said, kinda sad to see the sea creatures being cooped up in small spaces and made to perform for mankind to see/laugh at.
Great place to visit with kids enjoyed the show and had plenty of time to look around. There’s a restaurant and café for easy breaks. We went on a weekday, and it wasn’t crowded. The layout is well divided, making it comfortable to explore.
Great place not only for children, but also for everyone who loves animals. You will have great fun and learn something. The seal show was absolutely amazing. I definitely recommend it.
