The Oriental Bazaar in Shibuya stands as one of Tokyo's most established destinations for traditional Japanese crafts and souvenirs. Founded in 1950 by Tadao Yokota, this four-story building has served generations of visitors seeking authentic Japanese goods in the heart of one of Tokyo's busiest districts. The store's distinctive facade, decorated in traditional Japanese architectural style, makes it easily recognizable along Omotesando Avenue.

This family-run business represents a commitment to preserving and presenting Japanese craftsmanship to an international audience. The Oriental Bazaar functions as both a commercial enterprise and an informal cultural ambassador, offering accessible exposure to traditional arts that might otherwise require visits to multiple specialty shops or regional craft centers. The selection spans items from everyday household goods to ceremonial objects, providing insight into both historical and contemporary Japanese material culture.

Visitors navigate through floors dedicated to different categories of merchandise. The ground floor typically features kimono and yukata, ranging from vintage silk pieces to affordable cotton versions suitable for casual wear. Upper floors display ceramics, including tea ceremony utensils, decorative plates, and sake sets from various regional kilns.

The third floor specializes in furniture, screens, and larger decorative items such as tansu chests and byobu folding screens. Throughout the building, visitors find woodblock prints, paper goods, toys, and seasonal decorations. Staff members generally speak English and can provide information about the origins and uses of different items.

The store is located on Omotesando Avenue in Shibuya, positioned between the fashionable Harajuku area and the luxury shopping district of Omotesando. The nearest station is Meiji-jingumae Station, served by the Chiyoda and Fukutoshin subway lines, approximately a five-minute walk from the store. Alternatively, visitors can reach it from JR Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in about seven minutes on foot.

Traveler reviews

This is an excellent place to buy quality products for reasonable prices. We searched high and low in many stores in the Shibuya district for a nice Sake set and didn't find anything that looked authentic or was reasonably priced. This store had a number of Sake sets and the only problem we had was deciding on which one! This store is just what you want if you're looking for quality gifts/ souvenirs at reasonable prices.

Great shop with lots of helpful staff. A good spot to get lots of souvenirs in one go. I got myself a Happi and it's my favourite thing I got from my trip. Would highly recommend
I first went to the old store when I lived in Tokyo in the early 90s. Loved it then and the new store, while smaller, is still great and friendly. It's got decent quality at a fair price, what more do you want?
Despite the odd name, our favorite souvenir store in Tokyo. You will find here high quality items at reasonable prices. Attention: The store is closed on wednesdays and thursdays and has recently changed its location (not far away from old address, google maps is updated)
If you can make just one stop for souvenirs , let it be this. We had to buy a suitcase from Muji after shopping here!! Beautiful ceramic ware and sake sets, assorted unique Japanese artifacts - felt like buying the whole store! Some of the things we bought - a beautiful tea set, a couple of coffee mugs that are now our favorites, a bonsai plant, jewellery pouches and beautiful bag fabrics!

A bustling street scene in a Japanese shopping district. People walk along the narrow street lined with shops displaying colorful signs and awnings. A man pushes a stroller, and various goods are visible in the shop windows.
