Lovely spot! We got to learn about Otabe and watch it being made. The store was very interactive and has lots of selection! Everyone was so kind and friendly! Great experience!
Fun workshop for only 600 yen! You are taken on a brief tour of the factory (Japanese only) and then into a workshop room where you are given the opportunity to make 3 yatsuhashi (cinnamon, matcha, and purple yam) on your own! There are pictures and it is easy enough to follow along if you don't understand Japanese. Tip- book online ahead of time to reserve a spot
I came with my school to Japan from the United States. We are all in year two of Japanese or above, myself being one of the yoingest. As such, we speak a fair amount of Japanese. Even so, we found it difficult to understand the lady leading the class. Thankfully, my teacher was able to translate the lady's words as we went, so we could follow her instructions during the class. There was also a set on instructions printed in English on our tables, which were very helpful. All in all, it was a great experience that my teacher is like to take part in with the next school trip to Japan. I enjoyed it, as well, and I will gladly say that the creations of this establishment are absolutely delicious.
Yes, entry to the shop and factory viewing area is completely free of charge. Visitors can browse the store and observe the production process through viewing windows without paying any admission fee. However, hands-on workshops where you can make your own otabe require advance reservations and payment.
The factory is most active during morning hours, with operations starting at 8:30 AM and the shop opening at 9:00 AM. If you visit in the afternoon, the production line may not be operating, which makes the viewing experience less interesting. Plan your visit for the morning to see the automated process of making otabe in full action.
Reservations are required for factory tours and otabe-making classes, but you can freely visit the shop and viewing area without booking in advance. The store is open 365 days a year from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If you want to participate in a hands-on workshop, contact them ahead of time to secure your spot.
Otabe comes in traditional flavors like cinnamon (nikkin) and matcha, along with seasonal varieties that change throughout the year. Modern innovations include chocolate and Western-style versions. The main store also carries exclusive products like Kyo Baum that are only available at this location, making it worth visiting even if you've seen otabe at other shops.
The store is located approximately 10 minutes on foot from Jujo Station on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. Parking is available with approximately 40 spaces for cars and 5 spaces for buses. The address is 35-2, Nishi-Kujo Takabatake-cho, Minami-ku, Kyoto City. It's easily accessible whether you're traveling by public transportation or driving.
