Sakunami Onsen is a historic hot spring resort located in the mountainous Sendai region of Miyagi Prefecture, approximately 40 kilometers west of Sendai city. Nestled in a valley carved by the Hirose River, this onsen town has been welcoming visitors for over 1,300 years, with its therapeutic waters first discovered during the Nara period. The area gained prominence during the Edo period when it served as a rest stop along the Yamagata Kaido, an important feudal road connecting the coastal and inland regions.

The hot springs are fed by natural alkaline waters that emerge at temperatures between 55 and 65 degrees Celsius. These mineral-rich waters are renowned for their skin-smoothing properties, earning Sakunami the nickname "bijin-no-yu" or "beauty bath." The resort town comprises approximately 10 to 15 ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) that offer both day-use bathing and overnight accommodation. Many facilities feature outdoor rotenburo baths with views of the surrounding forested mountains, which are particularly striking during autumn when the foliage transforms into vibrant reds and golds.

Beyond bathing, visitors can explore the nearby Sakunami Kokeshi Museum, dedicated to the local craft of wooden kokeshi dolls that originated in this region during the Edo period. The area also serves as a gateway to outdoor activities including hiking trails through the Futakuchi Gorge and the scenic Sakunami Nature Park. Winter brings opportunities for skiing at nearby resorts, while the cooler months are ideal for enjoying the contrast between hot spring waters and crisp mountain air.

Sakunami Onsen is accessible from Sendai Station via the JR Senzan Line, with the journey to Sakunami Station taking approximately 40 to 50 minutes. Direct buses also operate from Sendai, taking roughly 60 minutes. Day-visit bathing fees at most ryokan range from ¥500 to ¥1,500, though some establishments require advance reservations. Overnight stays typically include dinner and breakfast, with prices varying by accommodation level and season.
