What other travelers are saying about Sakurai Shrine Futamigaura Torii
Beautiful and peaceful. It takes about 1 hour by bus from Hakata Station (you can ask the staff at the entrance for the correct bus route).
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, during low tide when the water recedes and exposes the beach. During high tide, the gate is partially submerged and inaccessible. Check tide schedules before visiting if you want close access.
No. The Itsukushima torii is in Hiroshima Prefecture and is much larger. The Futamigaura Torii is in Fukuoka Prefecture and is smaller with fewer crowds.
Sunset for silhouette shots, or early morning for softer light and fewer people. On clear winter days, Mount Fuji may be visible in the distance, though this is rare.
Parking, restrooms, and a few cafes are available nearby. The main Sakurai Shrine complex has a shrine office selling amulets. More facilities are in Itoshima city center, 10-15 minutes by car.
Yes. The beach is open for swimming during summer months, typically July and August. Swimming near the torii gate itself is generally discouraged out of respect for the sacred site.
Well worth the time to come out and see the white torii gate that’s in the ocean. If your like me, I took a train 1 bus (which an old man directed me what bus to take) and actually missed my bus going back to Fukuoka, but thankfully found out theirs an “express bus” that goes out near the shrine if you don’t mind walking 20 minutes to the stop.
I will come see the torii gates again.
The Sakurai Shrine Futamigaura Torii in Itoshima is a breathtaking coastal gem. The torii gate, framed by the sea and paired sacred rocks, creates a serene and photogenic setting, especially at sunset.
Its intimate charm and spiritual ambiance make it a must-visit. Low tide allows for a closer look, while high tide enhances its floating illusion. Nearby cafes and Shiraito Falls add to the experience. A perfect spot for quiet reflection or stunning photography!
Unfortunately it was a gloomy day during my visit, hopefully I’ll get another chance to visit in a nice sunny day.
Visited in the evening before the “golden” sunset hour so we had some peaceful moments before the crowd started to build up. Paid parking available a short walk away.
