Tenjin Underground Shopping Center

4.1 (6843)Shopping MallPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, locally known as Tenjin Chikagai, is one of Fukuoka's largest subterranean shopping complexes, stretching approximately 590 meters beneath the bustling Tenjin district. Opened in 1976, this underground arcade was developed to maximize urban space in one of Kyushu's most important commercial centers while providing convenient pedestrian access between major transit stations and department stores.

The shopping center houses over 150 stores, ranging from fashion boutiques and cosmetics shops to cafes, restaurants, and specialty retailers. The design follows a European-inspired aesthetic with stone-paved walkways, elegant storefronts, and carefully planned lighting that creates a pleasant atmosphere despite being entirely underground. The complex serves as both a practical shopping destination for locals and an interesting cultural experience for visitors wanting to observe everyday urban life in Fukuoka.

Visitors can explore the entire length of the shopping center while moving between subway stations, making it particularly convenient for those using public transportation. The shops cater to diverse tastes and budgets, with particular strength in Japanese fashion brands, accessory stores, and casual dining options. The underground location also connects to Fukuoka Parco, Mitsukoshi department store, and other major commercial buildings through various exits and underground passages, allowing extensive exploration without returning to street level.

The shopping center is directly accessible via Tenjin Station on both the Airport and Nanakuma subway lines, and Tenjin-Minami Station on the Nanakuma Line. Surface access points are located throughout the Tenjin district near major landmarks. Entry to the shopping center itself is free, though individual shops and restaurants set their own prices. The complex is fully integrated with Fukuoka's public transportation system, making it an effortless addition to any Fukuoka itinerary.

Tenjin Chikagai is quite an intense experience. There are many entrances into the mall and connections to the Nanakuma line, Airport line, the Nishitetsu Tenjin Express Bus Terminal, the Nishitetsu Fukuoka Tenjin station and all the shopping malls above ground. It's not a train station but already has 32 or more entrances. On a Friday evening, locals and tourists alike are crowding the underground mall, everyone with a destination in mind. Most are boutique stalls with a few drugstores and eateries among them.

A quite long 2 way underground mall that has local Japanese brands and lots of food choices and connected to the various malls like daimaru, mitsukoshi etc....but what stood for us in this underground mall was the tempura restaurant where the cook and staff were all 60+ year old people. I think it was the best tenzaru soba set that I ever had eaten in my life. It will become the benchmark of tenzaru soba for me.

Very convenient underground mall with access to all the department stores nearby. You can quite literally spend an entire day here shopping, because it has all the shops you need. You can also get food here and some really delicious matcha. The bathrooms are clean and accessible. Highly recommend coming here to shop, but it does get crowded.
