Saruhashi

Saruhashi, located in Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is a natural stone arch bridge spanning the Katsura River in the Japanese Alps. This geological formation has been celebrated for over 1,000 years and is recognized as one of Japan's three most unusual bridges alongside Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni and Shinkyo Bridge in Nikko. The bridge measures approximately 31 meters long and stands 15 meters above the river below.

The bridge gained cultural prominence during the Heian period (794-1185) when renowned poet Yamabe no Akahito composed a famous poem about its beauty, later included in classical Japanese poetry collections. Buddhist monk Kukai also referenced the bridge in his writings during the 9th century. Local legend attributes the bridge's name to a monkey (saru) that helped a traveling monk cross the gorge, though the name more likely derives from the area's historical monkey populations.

Saruhashi serves as both a natural monument and scenic overlook, offering visitors panoramic views of the surrounding Katsura River gorge and forested mountains. The site features a modern observation deck and walking paths that provide multiple vantage points for photography and contemplation. A small shrine near the bridge honors the site's spiritual significance, and visitors can purchase traditional omamori (protective charms) and ema (wooden prayer plaques).

Spring brings cherry blossoms that frame the bridge in pink petals, typically peaking in mid-April. Summer offers lush green canopy views and cooler temperatures due to the elevation. Autumn provides the most dramatic scenery when surrounding maple and oak trees turn vibrant red and gold, usually from mid-October to early November. Winter visits are possible but may involve icy conditions and reduced accessibility.

Saruhashi is accessible via JR Chuo Line to Saruhashi Station, followed by a 40-minute walk or 10-minute taxi ride to the site. Alternative access includes driving via National Route 20 with parking available near the entrance. The site is open year-round with no admission fee. Facilities include restrooms, a small visitor center, and a gift shop. The nearest accommodations are located in Otsuki or Kofu, both within 30 minutes by car.
