What other travelers are saying about Sasagawa Nagare
Rating 5 stars any season but summer, when they rope off the parking areas and charge ¥1000~ to access the beach. I go here to photograph the rock formations and on July 23, when we visited last, couldn’t park for even 5 minutes without paying some silly fee. Worth it if you want to swim and hang out at the beach, but for just photos, go during a different season. Stunning rock formations and arches.
A place to enjoy scenic views of the oddly shaped rocks and the Sea of Japan. It is possible to park a car here and there along Route 345, but during the bathing season there are many cars parked on the road, making it difficult to enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace. Out of season in spring or autumn is recommended.
Sasagawa Nagare is truly an amazingly beautiful, immaculate, invigorating Niigata beach, and is one of my favorite places to go in Niigata. If you enjoy swimming, especially snorkeling then this is the place for you. I was really impressed and felt blessed to dive into the crystal clear water and while snorkeling encountered squid and octopuses before my eyes. I felt lucky to see what I saw and I felt energized and recharged after going there. I look forward to experiencing this natural wonder again soon.
The best way to experience Sasagawa Nagare is by taking a sightseeing cruise from the harbor. These 40-minute boat tours navigate close to the rock formations, through sea caves, and along the cliff faces while providing commentary about the geological features. Alternatively, observation platforms and clifftop walking paths offer panoramic views from above.
From Tokyo or other major cities, take the shinkansen to Niigata City, then transfer to the JR Uetsu Main Line to Murakami Station. From Murakami Station, board a bus on the Seaside Line toward Senami Onsen and get off at Sasagawa Nagare stop after approximately 20 minutes. The cruise terminal and viewing areas are within walking distance from the bus stop.
Access to the observation areas and clifftop paths is free of charge. If you want to take the sightseeing cruise for close-up views of the rock formations, tickets typically cost around ¥1,200 for adults. This represents excellent value for a 40-minute guided tour through one of Japan's most spectacular coastal landscapes.
Yes, the site is accessible year-round. However, boat cruises may be suspended during rough sea conditions, particularly in winter months when storms from the Sea of Japan are common. Check weather and cruise availability before visiting in winter.
