Sennen no Sono Lavender Field is a 15-hectare lavender farm located in Takikawa City, Hokkaido, established in 1958 by local farmer Tadao Tomita. Originally created as an experimental herb cultivation project, the farm gradually expanded its lavender plantings throughout the 1960s and became one of Japan's premier lavender destinations. The name "Sennen no Sono" translates to "Garden of a Thousand Years," reflecting the founder's vision of creating a lasting agricultural legacy.

The lavender fields represent Hokkaido's successful adaptation of European agricultural techniques to Japan's northern climate. Sennen no Sono cultivates primarily four varieties of lavender: early-blooming, late-blooming, lavandula, and white lavender, contributing to the region's development as Japan's lavender capital. The farm has played a significant role in establishing Hokkaido's reputation for herb cultivation and agritourism.

Visitors can walk through designated pathways between the lavender rows, purchase fresh lavender products at the on-site shop, and enjoy lavender-flavored soft-serve ice cream and other local specialties. The farm offers lavender harvesting experiences during peak season, allowing guests to cut their own lavender bundles. A small museum displays the history of lavender cultivation in the region, and the gift shop sells essential oils, dried lavender, and handmade soaps produced on-site.

The optimal visiting period is mid-July to early August when the lavender reaches full bloom, creating the characteristic purple landscape. Early-blooming varieties flower from late June, while late-blooming types extend the season into mid-August. Outside the flowering season, the farm remains open but offers limited attractions, focusing primarily on the museum and shop.

Sennen no Sono is accessible by car via Route 233, approximately 10 kilometers from central Takikawa City. The nearest train station is Takikawa Station on the JR Hakodate Main Line, from which visitors must take a 20-minute taxi ride or rent a car, as public bus service is limited. Admission costs 500 yen for adults during lavender season and 300 yen during off-season periods. The farm operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily from May through October, with extended hours until 6:00 PM during peak blooming season. Free parking accommodates 200 vehicles.

Traveler reviews

Wonderful place to enjoy lavender. They say it is the largest field of lavender in Japan. We got to pick a big bundle of it (for a small fee) to have some at home too. Wish they had more lavender flavored treats for sale in the food section of the festival though.

This park is situated near the Musashi-Ranzan station on Tobu Tojo line. This is the largest lavender flower field in Japan. Unfortunately we were not able to enter inside the flower field because of heavy rain but we enjoyed the flower from outside. Even from outside we were able to get the smell of lavender. Overall the field looks very nice

The lavender is still green, no sign of purple yet (May 29th 2019), but the lavender festival doesn't start until June 8th at which time they should be in bloom. This lavender field is the largest in the whole of Japan. Until last year it was the largest in Kanto, but local farmers planted additional lavender to make it the largest in the country. You can find more information on the Ranzan Tourism website in Japanese or the Saitama with Kids website in English. Official parking is about a 10 minute walk away in B&G pool.

I went during the lavender festival. When I got close, there were so many banners that I couldn't help but wonder what was going on. The parking lot is large, and the entrance is at the food stall area. The lavender fields were much larger than I expected, and it felt like there was more to see the further I walked. The blooming varied from area to area, but most seemed to be in full bloom. There were different varieties of lavender, and there was even an area with white flowers. The scent was wonderful and very relaxing. However, it was a hot day, and I walked more than I anticipated, so I regretted leaving my water bottle in the car. Heat protection is essential. There are shaded areas and an observation deck further inside. Returning to the food stall area, I hesitated between lavender soft serve ice cream and lavender shaved ice, but I chose lavender shaved ice, which was delicious and refreshing on my parched throat. Admission is free, but there is a donation; parking was 1000 yen.
