Shibukawa Skyland Park

4.1 (1520)Amusement ParkPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Shibukawa Skyland Park is an amusement park located in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, situated at an elevation of approximately 460 meters on the slopes of Mount Haruna. Established in 1979, the park has operated for over four decades as a family-oriented destination, offering a combination of vintage rides and panoramic views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. Its elevated position provides visitors with sweeping vistas across the Kanto Plain, and on clear days, sightlines extend to Mount Akagi and the distant peaks of the Japanese Alps.

The park gained unexpected international attention in recent years through social media, where it became known for its retro aesthetic and somewhat weathered charm. Unlike modern theme parks, Shibukawa Skyland maintains a nostalgic atmosphere with classic attractions that have remained largely unchanged since its opening. The park features approximately 20 attractions, including a Ferris wheel, go-karts, a small roller coaster, and various children's rides. The Sky Wheel observation wheel stands as one of the main attractions, offering elevated views from its 50-meter height.

Visitors come to experience both the amusement facilities and the scenic natural environment. The park's appeal lies partly in its unhurried, old-fashioned character, which contrasts with the high-tech entertainment venues found in major Japanese cities. Photography enthusiasts are particularly drawn to the park's distinctive visual aesthetic. The surrounding area is also known for hot springs, making Shibukawa Skyland a potential stop within a broader itinerary exploring the Gunma region's onsen towns.

General admission to the park is charged separately from ride tickets, with standard entry typically priced around ¥500 to ¥800 for adults. Individual ride tickets can be purchased separately, or visitors may opt for a free-ride pass that provides unlimited access to attractions for approximately ¥2,000 to ¥2,500 depending on age and season.

Access to Shibukawa Skyland Park requires traveling to Shibukawa, located approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. From Shibukawa Station on the JR Joetsu Line, visitors can take a bus bound for Ikaho Onsen and disembark at the park entrance, with the journey taking roughly 15 minutes. Those driving can reach the park via the Kanetsu Expressway.

What other travelers are saying about Shibukawa Skyland Park

The park is outdated, but clean. The rides are old and snack bars closed, but who cares because the the kids are having too much fun with the attractions - it’s the adults who are passing judgment. They could use an update and build a new ride though…for real. The train wasn’t in operation, so that was a bummer. There’s a shallow pool for the kids to play in so don’t forget those swimsuits.

Spring and autumn offer the best weather and mountain views. Summer provides cooler temperatures due to the 460-meter elevation. Winter operations are limited with some attractions closed. Weekdays have fewer visitors than weekends and holidays.

Yes, though travel takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way via JR Joetsu Line to Shibukawa Station plus a 15-minute bus ride. Many visitors combine it with nearby Ikaho Onsen or stay overnight in the Gunma region.

The park has one small restaurant and snack stands serving basic Japanese dishes like curry rice and ramen. Options are limited. Vending machines are available throughout. More dining choices exist in Shibukawa town and Ikaho Onsen.

It was good time spent with my children and they get good memories. Tickets price little bit higher than other park. It was 7000¥ for 2 adults and 2 children 😁

Preventive measures for corona virus are implemented. Body temperature check at the gate and contact details logged before entering the park. The staff were friendly and rubbing alcohol are available everywhere. The Go-kart and roller coaster were fun and can be enjoyed by adults. The Ferris wheel is also nice showing the views of the nearby cities. One complain only is the ice park. It’s too short 😂

Great for toddlers. All rides are available but adults need to ride with them. Purchase 1 day pass - no need to pay per ride. There's a go-cart at the very back of the park, and it is highly recommended. Not crowded on Saturday when I went.
