Kawaba Denen Plaza is an expansive agricultural theme park located in Kawaba Village, Tone District, in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1996, the facility was developed as part of a regional revitalization project to promote local agriculture and rural tourism. The plaza spans approximately 20 hectares and serves as a bridge between urban visitors and the agricultural heritage of this mountainous region at the foot of Mount Hotaka.

The park showcases the agricultural traditions of Kawaba Village, a community renowned for its high-quality rice cultivation and pristine mountain water. Visitors gain insight into traditional farming practices while experiencing the seasonal rhythms of rural Japanese life. The facility operates as a working farm where local produce is grown using sustainable methods, reflecting the area's commitment to preserving its agricultural identity in the face of urbanization.

Kawaba Denen Plaza offers several visitor experiences centered on agriculture and local food culture. The park features pick-your-own fruit orchards where guests can harvest seasonal produce including blueberries, apples, and grapes. A dedicated craft beer brewery produces Kawaba Kogen Beer, which has gained recognition across Japan for its quality. The facility includes restaurants serving dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, bakeries using Kawaba-grown wheat, and shops selling fresh vegetables, dairy products, and regional specialties. Hands-on workshops allow visitors to make sausages, butter, and other artisanal products.

The plaza is accessible by car, located approximately 2 hours from Tokyo via the Kanetsu Expressway, exiting at Numata Interchange and continuing for about 15 kilometers. Public transportation users can take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen Station, then transfer to a local bus, though service frequency is limited. Most visitors arrive by private vehicle due to the rural location. Admission to the park is free, though individual activities such as fruit picking, workshops, and brewery tours require separate fees ranging from 500 to 2,000 yen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blueberries are available from late June through August, while apples and grapes can be picked from September through November. Autumn also brings fall foliage to the surrounding mountains. The park operates year-round with the brewery, restaurants, and shops accessible in all seasons. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends and national holidays.

Public transport requires taking the JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen Station, then a local bus toward Kawaba Village. Buses run only a few times daily. A taxi for the final 20 kilometers costs significantly more. Most visitors rent a car from Tokyo or Takasaki due to limited bus schedules and the rural location.

Fruit picking does not require reservations on weekdays but may reach capacity on weekends during peak seasons. Hands-on workshops for sausage making and butter churning require advance booking. Brewery tours accept walk-ins but reservations guarantee spots. Restaurants do not require reservations except for large groups.

The main restaurant serves set meals with Kawaba rice, local pork, and seasonal vegetables. A food court offers pizza and noodles. The bakery sells bread and pastries made with Kawaba wheat. The brewery restaurant pairs Kawaba Kogen Beer with German-style dishes. Takeaway stands sell ice cream from local dairy and fresh juice. Most venues accept cash and major credit cards.

No accommodations exist at the plaza itself. Traditional inns and small hotels are located within 5 to 10 kilometers, some with natural hot spring baths. The Minakami Onsen hot spring resort area is approximately 20 kilometers away. Business hotels are available in Numata town, about 15 kilometers from the plaza. Advance booking is recommended during autumn and summer weekends.

Traveler reviews

It’s a really nice area. We stopped on our first day for some lunch at a pasta place, had a good look around at the produce for sale and let the kids loose at the play park there, they loved the hill slide! We decided we’d come back the next day to take produce home. We got plenty of beautiful fruit and veg, fruit syrups, cheese, bread, smoked meat and craft beers. The kids wanted to hit the play park again but also there were some entertainers by the pond so we could all sit, eat some cheese etc and relax. There are also some walking trails behind it. We will come back for sure.

【賑わいの中でひと休み:癒しの道の駅体験】 A vibrant pit stop nestled in the heart of Gunma, Michinoeki Denen Plaza is more than just a roadside station—it’s a community gathering point that hums with life. We dropped by on our way back to Tokyo and found it the perfect place to stretch our legs and soak in a bit of local charm. What struck us immediately was the popularity—by the time we parked in Area 7, spaces were already filling fast. Still, the atmosphere was welcoming, with families, couples, and travelers (furry companions included) meandering through the grounds. The locally produced nomu yogurt was a revelation: creamy, tart, and just the right size at 160 yen. A perfect breakfast companion. The market had an impressive array of fresh local produce, ideal for souvenirs or just a snack for the road. Benches placed thoughtfully in the plaza gave us space to unwind while our dog relaxed by our feet. Clean toilets, cheerful entertainers performing on the lawn, and play areas for kids all added to the feeling of a lively but well-kept village fair. If there’s any gentle critique, it’s that the popularity comes at the price of peace—it was only after we left for a quieter lunch nearby that we realized how noisy it had been. Still, it’s a spot I’ve saved for future visits. ⸻ 【Features】 🚘 Parking: Multiple lots available 🐶 Pets allowed - Outdoor only 🚻 Toilet inside the establishment 💰 Payment: ✅Cash and Credit Card 🔙 Would I visit again? 💓Definitely

Interesting stop, albeit not exactly ‘en route’ so please take note even though there’s ’roadside’ in the name :) It was a detour for us to take our lunch stop here. The overall experience had good vibes, we liked the atmosphere. Didn’t get the chance to really walk around as we needed to get back into the highway for our journey. Even so we enjoyed our soba lunch very much before hitting the road again. And we dropped in the Farmers Market as well to get some strawberries and fresh juices. Recommend stopping by here if time permits and if you are on a drive trip in Japan .

Soserene, so quiet, so un-touristy. Sounds of birds chirping and a pair of geese honking. Gentle breeze and plenty of outdoor seatfor a packed lunch while you look beyond and soak in the scenery. Stores sell some nice local produce like veggies ,honey, cheese and sake. Prices are a bit on the high side, in my opinion, and i wasn't very impressed with the ball mozarella cheese (too hard, not enough milky taste). Overall, a wonderful place to visit. Oh, i forget to mention there's a fishing area a short distance away where I watched people fish in all kinds of manner and it was very very educational and fun to see some catch a fish every 3 minutes whilst others sat and looked enviously with nothing at the end of their rods 😆
