Shirakami Mountains, Aomori

Last updated Mar 26, 2026

The Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range spans northern Honshu along the Sea of Japan, covering an area with altitudes ranging from 100 to 1,243 meters above sea level. Straddling the border between Aomori and Akita Prefectures, this vast natural beech forest was registered by UNESCO as Japan's first World Natural Heritage Site in December 1993. The Shirakami-Sanchi was formed when the Sea of Japan rose approximately 2 million years ago.

The Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Property encompasses a wilderness area covering one third of the Shirakami mountain range, containing the largest remaining virgin beech forest in East Asia. Large areas of primeval natural forest, mainly Japanese beech, have remained in a "pure forest" state. The beech forest spans approximately 17,000 hectares (65 square miles) and has not been affected by human influence. This pristine ecosystem supports a diverse range of flora and fauna unique to the region. To maintain its natural untouched beauty, some areas have restricted admission.

The main attraction of Shirakami Sanchi are the various hiking trails that lead through the forests. The Shirakami area offers hiking options ranging from beginner-level paths to advanced, rugged trails, allowing visitors to choose routes suited to their ability and schedule, with all trails marked and guides recommended. One of the few hiking trails accessible by public transportation is the Shirakamidake trail, with the trailhead a 30 minute walk from Shirakamidake Tozanguchi Station along the JR Gono Line, and the entire round trip to Shirakamidake's peak taking approximately eight hours from the station. From early October to early November, visitors can hike through golden-colored beech forests.

Getting to the Shirakami Mountains is accessible via several transportation options. The JR Gono Line connects Aomori's Kawabe to Akita's Higashi-Noshira, hugs the Sea of Japan passing by Senjojiki Beach and all of Shirakami Sanchi, requiring approximately 5-6 hours of travel and offering scenic views throughout the journey. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Odate-Noshiro Airport and rent a car to explore the region. There is no general admission fee to enter the mountains, though certain restricted core areas may have limited or permitted access only.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Shirakami Mountains are located on the border between Aomori and Akita prefectures in northern Honshu, Japan. What makes them truly special is that they contain the largest remaining virgin beech forest in East Asia. The core area of approximately 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, recognized for its pristine ecosystem that has remained virtually untouched by human activity.

The Shirakami Mountains are home to diverse wildlife including the Asian black bear (known locally as the moon bear), Japanese serow (a goat-antelope), Japanese macaques, and various bird species such as woodpeckers and golden eagles. The rich beech forest ecosystem supports this biodiversity by providing abundant food sources, particularly beech nuts, which are crucial for many animals' survival, especially during winter months.

Yes, tourists can visit the Shirakami Mountains, but access varies depending on the area. The UNESCO World Heritage core zone has restricted access to protect the pristine environment, and visitors typically need permits. However, the buffer zones surrounding the core area offer numerous hiking trails, observation points, and visitor centers that are accessible to the public. Popular spots include the Anmon Falls trail and the Juniko (Twelve Lakes) area, which showcases beautiful blue ponds.

The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. Summer (June to August) offers lush green forests and is ideal for hiking, though it can be humid. Autumn (late September to early November) is particularly spectacular when the beech trees turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold. Spring brings fresh greenery, while winter is generally difficult for access due to heavy snowfall, though this creates a pristine white landscape for those equipped for winter mountain conditions.

Beech forests like those in Shirakami are considered "mother forests" because they create incredibly rich ecosystems. The beech trees provide dense canopy cover that regulates temperature and humidity, their fallen leaves create nutrient-rich soil, and their nuts provide essential food for wildlife. These forests also play a crucial role in water retention and purification, acting as natural reservoirs that release clean water gradually into rivers. The Shirakami beech forest represents what much of northern Japan's forests looked like before development, making it invaluable for scientific research and conservation.

Traveler reviews

Worth the day trip adventure from Ajigasawa! The whole drive was just as beautiful as the park. Lots of great stops along the way. Its corn season so highly recommend stopping at one of the stands on your way!

Since it was a weekday and before the autumn leaves changed color, there were few people, and I was able to stroll around and breathe in the fresh air of nature at a leisurely pace. I heard that maintenance of the paths and other infrastructure is difficult due to the World Heritage designation. I hope they can restore the route along the river soon. It's such a waste.

It was uncrowded and comfortable!😆 There were lots of beech trees and it was a walking path✨ There's a water fountain at the entrance, so I should have brought a water bottle or plastic bottle😅
