Sumida Park

Sumida Park stretches along both banks of the Sumida River in Tokyo, primarily spanning the Sumida and Taito wards. The park was established in 1931 as one of Tokyo's first public parks, designed to provide residents with green space and river access in the densely populated eastern districts of the city. Its creation reflected early urban planning efforts to balance industrial development with recreational areas for the growing population.

The park holds particular significance as one of Tokyo's most celebrated cherry blossom viewing locations, featuring approximately 640 cherry trees along a 1-kilometer stretch of the riverbank. These trees were originally planted during the Edo period in the 18th century under the direction of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune, who wished to create accessible leisure spaces for common citizens. The tradition of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing, has continued here for over three centuries, making Sumida Park a site of genuine historical continuity in Tokyo's recreational culture.

Visitors experience the park differently throughout the year, though spring remains the peak season when the cherry blossoms typically bloom in late March to early April. During this period, the park hosts the Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival, drawing substantial crowds for both daytime viewing and evening illuminations. The riverside promenade offers views of the Tokyo Skytree, which rises 634 meters directly behind the northern section of the park, creating a distinctive contrast between historical nature and modern architecture. The park also provides access to traditional water bus services that operate along the Sumida River, connecting various Tokyo waterfront destinations.

The park spans both sides of the river, connected by several bridges including the distinctive Azuma Bridge. The eastern bank in Sumida Ward contains wider open spaces and sits adjacent to the Asakusa district, while the western bank in Taito Ward runs alongside traditional neighborhoods. Small shrines, including Ushijima Shrine and Mimeguri Shrine, are located within or immediately adjacent to the park grounds, reflecting the area's historical religious significance.

The park is accessible via multiple train stations: Asakusa Station serves the western section and is reachable via the Tobu Skytree Line, Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, and Toei Asakusa Line, while Tokyo Skytree Station on the Tobu Skytree Line provides access to the eastern section. The park lies approximately 7 kilometers northeast of Tokyo Station and is well-integrated into the city's public transportation network, making it easily reachable for both tourists visiting nearby Asakusa and local residents.

Great park to chill just 2 blocks away from Senso-Ji temple. Great view of the river and Tokyo Skytree across the river. Its quiet and not particularly crowded. Ample space for runs or easy stroll along the river banks. Love this park
The cherry trees are still dry; I can imagine how beautiful they must be in summer! It's a lovely place for a peaceful stroll and to get away from the crowds for a while
This is a very nice place to walk around and relax, especially with the beautiful view of the Tokyo Skytree. I visited during cherry blossom season, and there were so many sakura trees blooming along the park. You can also enjoy walking along the Sumida River, which feels very peaceful and relaxing.
Beautiful scenery. Nice park and garden. Even though we visited in fall it was still a pretty park to walk through. Great view of Skytree and the river. There is a public restroom in the park.
