The Tama River Cycling Road runs over 50 kilometers along the banks. Bicycles can be rented near the river or you can bring your own. The upper reaches near Okutama have hiking trails and opportunities for kayaking and fishing.
Late March to early April for cherry blossoms along the riverbanks. Autumn for migratory bird watching at the estuary. Summer for water activities in the Okutama area.
Swimming is not recommended in lower and middle sections due to currents and water quality. The upper reaches near Okutama allow kayaking, fishing, and wading in designated areas.
The full 50+ kilometer route takes 4 to 6 hours for experienced cyclists. The 20-kilometer section between Futako-Tamagawa and Hamura takes 2 to 3 hours.
Public restrooms and vending machines are located at riverside parks and rest areas at regular intervals. The Futako-Tamagawa area has restaurants and cafes. Remote sections near Okutama have fewer facilities.
