Togakushi Ninja Museum・Ninja Trick Mansion, Nagano

The Togakushi Ninja Museum complex is dedicated to the Togakure school of ninjutsu, which originated in the 12th century when a warrior from Nagano fled to Iga after fighting on the losing side of a war between the Minamoto and Taira clans. After learning ninja skills in Iga, the traditional bedrock of ninja culture, he returned to establish his own ninja school in the mountains of Togakushi. The mountains had long been inhabited by Buddhist-shaman ascetics known as yamabushi, and aspects of their philosophy found their way into the Togakushi school.

The museum complex consists of three distinct sections housed in restored traditional buildings. The Togakure Ninja Museum is established in an all-zelkova private house of a wealthy farmer, reconstructed on the premises, and exhibits 500 articles of ninja tools and 200 photo panels explaining the school of Togakure and its practical skills. The Togakushi Folk Museum houses a restored granary from the Edo period displaying over 2,000 articles of daily necessities that supported traditional life in Togakushi.

The centerpiece attraction is the Ninja Trick Mansion (Ninja Karakuri Yashiki), a building that looks ordinary on the outside but contains numerous traps and secret passageways, creating a veritable labyrinth that's notoriously tough to get out of. Visitors typically spend 45 minutes navigating through hidden doors, tilted rooms, and maze-like passages, making it an engaging escape room experience for all ages. The house features secret doors with varying means of opening them, hidden tilted rooms, and mazes with sliding panels that challenge perception and rational thinking.

Beyond the main buildings, the complex offers interactive ninja training activities. Visitors can practice shuriken (ninja throwing stars) throwing at a target range, with the opportunity to win prizes for hitting 5 out of 7 targets. The grounds also feature outdoor training equipment including a suspension bridge, shaky two-story pagoda, and mini rope course.

From JR Nagano Station, take express buses 70 or 71 bound for Togakushi (approximately 60 minutes, ¥2,000 one way) and get off at Togakushi-Okushairiguchi bus stop. Seat reservations should be made in advance online or at the Alpico Bus ticket office at Nagano Station. The museum is located directly across from the entrance to Upper Togakushi Shrine. ¥600 for adults, with additional fees for shuriken throwing (¥700 for 7 throws). Operating hours are 9 AM to 5 PM from late April to late November, with facilities closed during winter months due to snow. The museum provides English translations for the most important information, though some exhibits are only in Japanese.
