Tokoji Temple, Hagi

Tokoji Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple located in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1691, it serves as one of the two family temples of the Mori clan, the powerful feudal lords who ruled the Choshu Domain during the Edo period. The temple was specifically built to honor the even-numbered generation lords of the Mori family, while its counterpart, Daishoin Temple, houses the memorials of the odd-numbered lords.

The temple's most significant feature is its atmospheric cemetery containing the stone lanterns and graves of five Mori lords along with their family members. More than 500 stone lanterns line the pathways leading to the burial grounds, creating a striking visual corridor that becomes particularly enchanting during the annual Obon festival in August when all lanterns are illuminated. The temple grounds exemplify classic Zen temple architecture with well-maintained gardens that reflect the aesthetic principles of simplicity and natural harmony characteristic of the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism to which Tokoji belongs.

Visitors can explore the main temple hall, stroll through the lantern-lined cemetery paths, and experience the serene atmosphere of this historical site. Local buses also service the area, though schedules may be infrequent. Admission to the temple grounds costs ¥300 for adults. The temple is part of Hagi's UNESCO World Heritage Site designation as a component of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution."
