Toyoni Lake

Toyoni Lake is a pristine alpine lake located in Hokkaido's Daisetsuzan National Park, situated at an elevation of 1,850 meters in the Tokachi mountain range. The lake was formed by volcanic activity and remains relatively unknown compared to Hokkaido's more famous destinations, making it one of Japan's best-kept natural secrets.

The lake holds cultural significance for the indigenous Ainu people, who considered the surrounding peaks sacred and used the area for traditional hunting and spiritual practices. The name "Toyoni" derives from the Ainu language, reflecting the deep connection between the landscape and indigenous heritage. The area was designated as part of Daisetsuzan National Park in 1934, protecting its pristine ecosystem and rare alpine flora.

Visitors can experience exceptional hiking opportunities along the Tokachi-dake trail system, which offers multiple routes ranging from moderate day hikes to challenging multi-day treks. The lake's crystal-clear waters perfectly mirror the surrounding peaks, creating spectacular photographic opportunities. Advanced hikers often use Toyoni Lake as a base camp for ascending Mount Tokachi (2,077 meters) and exploring the volcanic crater lakes in the region.

Summer months from July to September provide optimal visiting conditions, with wildflowers blooming across alpine meadows and temperatures reaching comfortable levels for camping. Winter transforms the area into a snow-covered wilderness accessible only to experienced mountaineers with proper equipment. Spring and autumn offer dramatic seasonal changes but require careful weather monitoring due to rapidly changing conditions.

Access requires hiking approximately 6 kilometers from the Tokachidake Onsen trailhead, reachable by car or seasonal bus service from Kamifurano town. No admission fees apply to the national park, but overnight camping requires permits obtained from park authorities. The nearest accommodation is Tokachidake Onsen hot spring resort, located 45 minutes by car from Kamifurano Station on the JR Furano Line. Visitors should carry appropriate gear including bear bells, as the area is active brown bear habitat.
