One of the most interesting shrine we have visited so far. Have to climb a few stairs and arch bridges but the main shrine is built inside a cave. There is also “making a wish” challenge to throw the good luck bean into a square hole on stone turtle. Looks too difficult so we didn’t try. Won’t be able to take the disappointment… worth a visit.
Udo Shrine occupies the cave where Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, father of Emperor Jimmu, was mythologically born. His mother, Princess Toyotama-hime, gave birth in this coastal grotto, establishing it as a sacred site in Shinto tradition.
Visitors descend a steep stone stairway called the Undo with uneven steps and railings. The path requires moderate fitness for the return climb and can be challenging for those with mobility limitations. Proper footwear is necessary.
Udo Shrine is located approximately 40 kilometers south of Miyazaki city center along the Nichinan coast. The journey takes roughly one hour by car via the Nichinan Coastal Road or about 90 minutes using public transportation with a train and bus combination.
The Nichinan Coastal Road offers scenic Pacific views and connects to other attractions including Sun Messe Nichinan with its moai statues, Obi Castle town with preserved samurai residences, and Aoshima Island with its distinctive rock formations. These sites can be combined into a day trip from Miyazaki city.
There's something about a shrine that's nestled in a hollow on the coastline that's amazing. It's all painted so beautifully and the backdrop is good. It's almost impossible not to get a good picture. That usually means a place is a must visit, right?
Incredibly beautiful temple near the sea, I recommend going through the forest to see the little shrine further up, it’s quite worthwhile and calm. The main temple near the sea itself is wonderful and so beautiful.
Visiting Udo Jingu was one of the most memorable parts of our Miyazaki trip—an experience that blended spiritual calm, dramatic scenery, and family-friendly adventure.
🏞️ Breathtaking Setting
Perched right into a seaside cliff, the shrine overlooks the ocean through a naturally formed cave. Walking there feels like entering an enchanted world—waves crashing below, salty sea breeze in the air, and the view through the cave like a secret window to the sea.
🙏 Tranquil & Reverent Atmosphere
Despite its natural grandeur, the shrine grounds remain peaceful and not overly crowded. The quiet murmur of prayers, rustling leaves, and ebbing waves created a soothing ambiance that instantly relaxed us all.
🍀 Love Stones & Wishing Ritual
A highlight was the famous undama (lucky stones)—small pebbles you toss into a narrow hole carved below the cave shrine. If it enters, your wish comes true! Watching each family member give it a try was full of joyful suspense—heads tilted, arms extended, kids cheering, and fingers crossed.
🚶 Scenic Hike & Great for Kids
There’s a gentle walk through wooded paths along the cliffs, giving beautiful views at every turn. Our kids were excited throughout, spotting ocean vistas and stopping for snacks from temple vendors.
✨ A Meaningful Stop
Udo Jingu isn’t just a “see-it-and-go” shrine. It offers a heartfelt, multi-sensory experience—sea echoes in a holy cave, ancient rituals, folklore, and quiet moments of reflection.
