Uno Port Inn is a historic waterfront establishment located in Uno Port, a small fishing harbor in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The inn dates back to the Edo period when Uno served as a strategic maritime waypoint along the Seto Inland Sea trading routes. Originally built to accommodate merchants and sailors traveling between Honshu and Shikoku islands, the inn has preserved much of its traditional wooden architecture and retains the atmospheric charm of Japan's feudal era.

The inn holds cultural significance as one of the few remaining examples of traditional ryokan architecture in the region that has continuously operated for over 200 years. Its location in Uno Port connects visitors to the area's maritime heritage, as the port was historically vital for transporting goods like salt, rice, and pottery across the Inland Sea. The building features classic elements including tatami mat rooms, sliding shoji screens, and a communal bathing area with views overlooking the harbor.

Visitors to Uno Port Inn experience authentic Japanese hospitality with overnight stays in traditional rooms and meals featuring fresh seafood caught daily from the Seto Inland Sea. The inn serves as an ideal base for exploring nearby Naoshima Island, known internationally for its contemporary art museums, which lies just 20 minutes away by ferry from Uno Port. Guests can walk along the historic port area, visit local fish markets, and observe fishing boats departing at dawn, maintaining practices unchanged for generations.

Uno Port is accessible via the JR Uno Line from Okayama Station, with the journey taking approximately 50 minutes. The inn is located a 5-minute walk from Uno Station. Ferry services to Naoshima and other art islands of the Seto Inland Sea depart regularly from the adjacent port terminal. Advance reservations are required for overnight accommodation, and rates typically include both dinner and breakfast featuring regional specialties. Day visitors interested in viewing the historic building should contact the inn directly, as public tours are limited to preserve the experience for staying guests.

Traveler reviews

We stayed at the Uno Port Inn as it was convenient to get the boats to Naoshima & Teshima during our September trip. What a lovely little place! A comfortable room with a good sized breakfast and clean bathroom facilities (toilets and shower are not shared with others, but they are not inside your room). The staff were superb–especially Minh–who helped us with planning our days and also luggage forwarding. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a budget-friendly accommodation option within close proximity of the art islands.

Minh, Long, Momo and all the team did a fantastic job in making us feel welcome and in taking care of us. The location is perfect for the passenger boats and the ferries to the art islands - any closer and you'd be in the ticket office! The included breakfast has a small fresh fruit, yoghurt and granola combo [or a bread basket choice] followed by a roll or beigel with an egg, bacon, sausage , fish sausage combo of your choice. Perfect if you're in a hurry to catch a ferry - the roll comes pre-wrapped too! The whole place has a lovely relaxed vibe with retro jazz music playing in the cafe. We had some excellent dinner recommendations for both nights of our stay. The rooms, named after film directors, are compact and very clean and you have your own private bathroom close by.

Give Long a promotion! This inn is very convenient (including breakfast) when visiting the islands. However, the star of the show was Long who was extremely helpful and even came up with ideas how to plan our days efficiently! Highly recommended 🫶

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at UNO Port Inn! The hospitality here is exceptional. Every staff member went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Our room, the “Miyazaki,” named after the legendary Japanese director, was cozy, charming, and full of personality. It’s clear a lot of love and thought have gone into this place. The food at UNO Port Inn was also very good. The bagels were delicious, and the breakfast overall was balanced and satisfying, adding greatly to our delightful experience. The staff were incredibly helpful, giving us detailed advice for our day trip to Teshima. Thanks to their thoughtful preparation, everything went perfectly smoothly. If you’re debating between UNO Port Inn and the nearby “Uno Hotel,” don’t hesitate. Choose UNO Port Inn. The other place is a soulless imitation that has stolen the original idea and is unfairly taking customers. UNO Port Inn offers a genuinely special experience at a reasonable price, with warmth and character you won’t find anywhere else. Highly recommend!

It’s a Japanese style bedroom with the futons on the floor. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. It’s a bit quirky because your private bathroom is down the hall for which you have a key. Has it all: homemade breakfast, location across from the ferry terminal making it easy to go toNaoshima art Island, laundry facilities for you too. How perfect is that I like this place a lot.
