Wake Town Wisteria Park, Okayama

Wake Fuji Park in Okayama was opened back in 1985 and has since become one of Japan's premier destinations for wisteria viewing. Located in Wake Town within Okayama Prefecture, this specialized botanical park was established to showcase the remarkable diversity of Japan's native wisteria species. The park represents a significant cultural investment in preserving and displaying these traditionally beloved flowers that hold deep meaning in Japanese aesthetics and seasonal appreciation.

Approximately 100 types of wisteria have been collected from all over the country, making it one of the best in the country in terms of variety. The park's crown jewel is the huge wisteria trellis with a total length of 500 meters, creating an enchanting tunnel of cascading blooms. The wisteria with clusters of flowers hanging down for 1 meter creates a spectacular overhead canopy during peak season. The flowers come in a variety of colors, from deep purple to light purple, pink and white, offering visitors a comprehensive display of wisteria's natural color palette.

Visitors can experience walking beneath the extensive wisteria tunnels while surrounded by the flowers' distinctive fragrance. The park becomes particularly magical during the annual Wisteria Festival from late April to early May when the blooms reach their peak. The flowers are also illuminated until 9 pm during the festival period, allowing visitors to enjoy their beauty after dark. The Wake History Folklore Museum is located adjacent to the park, providing additional cultural context for visitors interested in the region's heritage.

Normally, the park is free to enter, but during the best flower viewing period (late April to early May), an admission fee is required for the Wisteria Festival. Admission to the park is only charged during the blooming season, and is priced at a reasonable 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for children. Parking is free. Access involves taking the JR Sanyo Line from Okayama Station to Wake (30 minutes), followed by approximately 8 minutes by taxi to reach the park.
