Yubara Hot Spring is located in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture, in the mountainous region of western Japan. This historic onsen town sits at the foot of Mount Kenashi and has been welcoming visitors for over 800 years, with records of the hot springs dating back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The area gained prominence as a healing retreat for samurai and travelers along ancient mountain routes.
The hot springs are fed by alkaline simple thermal water that emerges at temperatures between 40-60°C (104-140°F). The mineral-rich waters are renowned for their therapeutic properties, particularly for treating skin conditions, muscle pain, and fatigue. Yubara serves as the gateway to Hiruzen Kogen Highland, a volcanic plateau that offers spectacular mountain scenery and is part of the Daisen-Oki National Park.
Visitors can experience traditional onsen bathing at several ryokan inns and public bathhouses throughout the town. The most notable facility is Yubara Kokusai Kanko Hotel, which features both indoor and outdoor baths with mountain views. The town also offers hiking trails leading to Mount Kenashi (1,218 meters) and scenic drives through the surrounding highlands. Traditional kaiseki dining featuring local mountain vegetables and river fish is available at most accommodations.
Spring brings cherry blossoms to the mountain slopes, while summer offers ideal conditions for hiking and outdoor activities with temperatures rarely exceeding 25°C (77°F). Autumn transforms the surrounding forests into vibrant displays of red and gold foliage, typically peaking in mid to late October. Winter brings snow to the higher elevations, creating opportunities for winter sports at nearby Hiruzen Kogen ski areas.
Yubara Hot Spring is accessible by JR train to Chugoku-Katsuyama Station, followed by a 20-minute bus ride on the Maniwa City community bus system. The journey from Okayama City takes approximately 90 minutes by train and bus. Most ryokan offer day-use bathing for 500-1,000 yen, while overnight stays typically range from 8,000-15,000 yen per person including meals. Public parking is available throughout the town at no charge.
