Yakushima Tourist Center serves as the primary information hub for visitors exploring Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in Miyanoura, the island's main port town, the center operates within the Yakushima Environmental Cultural Village Center and provides comprehensive support for travelers venturing into this subtropical paradise that inspired Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke."

The center functions as both an information resource and gateway to understanding Yakushima's unique ecosystem. The island earned recognition as Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage site due to its ancient cedar forests containing some of Japan's oldest living trees, with specimens over 1000 years old affectionately called yakusugi. The center's staff provide essential guidance for accessing the island's diverse landscapes, from coastal areas receiving 4,000mm of annual rainfall to mountain peaks experiencing over 10,000mm yearly, making it one of Japan's rainiest locations.

Visitors can obtain detailed information about the island's remarkable biodiversity, including approximately 7,000 wild Yakuzaru monkeys and an equal number of Yakushika deer, both unique subspecies found only on Yakushima. The center also provides crucial advice for those planning to climb Mount Miyanoura, at 1,935 meters the tallest peak in southern Japan, offering 360-degree views above the forest canopy.

The center features a comprehensive souvenir market on the ground floor, showcasing over 5,000 local Yakushima specialty products, including crafts made of Yakushima cedar, sweets, seafood, and shochu. Local confections made from ponkan and tankan oranges are particularly popular among visitors. Climbing equipment rental services are available for those planning mountain expeditions, while the second floor houses a restaurant serving traditional Yakushima cuisine.

The center is located at 823-1 Miyanoura, Yakushima Environmental Cultural Village Center, in Kumage-gun, Kagoshima Prefecture. It operates daily except the third Tuesday of every month (excluding July through October) and closes from December 28 to January 1. The facility is conveniently positioned near the "Miyanourako Iriguchi" bus stop, making it easily accessible for visitors arriving by public transport.

Yakushima is accessible by ferry from Kagoshima or flights from Kagoshima, Fukuoka, and Osaka. The most convenient way to explore the island is by rental car, with outlets available at Miyanoura Port and the airport, as public buses do not service the entire island. Free bus pass tickets for local Yakushima Kotsu buses are available at the jetfoil reception counters in Miyanoura and Anbo ports, the airport, and tourist information centers. The center provides luggage storage services during operating hours in exchange for contact information or accommodation details.

The tourist center combines a souvenir shop, cafe, large restaurant and has toilets. This is the best place to buy postcards. Luggage can be left at the front door while you shop or eat in the cafe on the second floor.
Very friendly and helpful staff. They have a translation system that supports several languages with live interpreters (not only English) that works super well! They gave nice tips and provided bus time tables. In addition, they sell cookies, fish, teas and souvenirs in general. They also sell water and other beverages. It is possible to pay with credit card provided the bill is above 2000 yen. They have restrooms and a restaurant on the 1st.
There are no English-speaking staff here. Jomon-cedar trekkers can buy bus tickets between Yakusugi Museum and Arakawa trailhead here, or other visitor centers. Cash only. 2,000 yen one way, 3,000 yen round trip. This bus ticket DOES NOT RESERVE a specific bus service , date, time or seat. On the morning of the trekking day, go to the Yakusugi Museum and give this ticket to the staff. At that time, you will receive a VOUCHER . The voucher indicates which time bus you can board on the day. It is super complicated procedure because they don’t digitalized at all. You can also purchase the tickets directly at the Yakusugi Museum on the day of trekking. It’s better to buy it to avoid crowds, especially for those who go on weekends and holidays.
You can rent flippers and snorklimg mask here for a good price! 2800 yen per set if im not wrong
