Yakusugi Land is a nature park located in the mountainous interior of Yakushima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters. The park serves as an accessible entry point for visitors seeking to experience the island's famous ancient cedar forests without undertaking the strenuous hikes required to reach more remote areas like Jomon Sugi, the island's most celebrated tree estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old.

The park's primary significance lies in its population of yakusugi, the indigenous Japanese cedar trees that are over 1,000 years old. These trees have developed their remarkable longevity due to Yakushima's harsh mountain climate and nutrient-poor soil, which produce extremely dense wood with high resin content that resists decay and insect damage. This unique ecosystem contributed to Yakushima's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, recognized for its outstanding universal value as a natural habitat containing significant biodiversity.

Yakusugi Land offers four walking courses ranging from 30 minutes to 150 minutes, allowing visitors to choose routes suited to their fitness levels and time constraints. The trails wind through moss-covered forests showcasing centuries-old cedar specimens, including notable trees like the Sennen Sugi (Thousand Year Cedar) and Mother and Child Cedar.

The well-maintained wooden boardwalks and pathways make the ancient forest accessible while minimizing environmental impact. Visitors can observe the layered forest ecosystem where fallen trees become nurse logs supporting new growth, demonstrating the forest's regenerative cycles.

The park is located approximately 16 kilometers from Anbo Port and 20 kilometers from Miyanoura Port, the island's two main ferry terminals. Access requires private transportation as public buses do not serve the park directly; rental cars and taxis are the primary options. The journey from either port takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes along winding mountain roads. Admission to Yakusugi Land costs ¥500 for high school students and above, with younger children entering free.

What other travelers are saying about Yakusugi Land

Fabulous place, well worth a visit. Don't let the name put you off. You drive up a windy, twisty, sometimes one lane to get to the park. You may see deer and monkeys on the way. At the entrance area is the first of 2 carparks, a rest house with toilets, a souvenir shop and info centre. Then there's the gate to the park. The entrance fee is ¥500 for adults. There are several courses through the park listed by the time it takes. The shortest course takes 30 minutes and can be done wearing sneakers. The timings for the courses are pretty spot on and the staff will also show you photos of the trails so you know what to expect. The trails are really well marked in Japanese and English. They also check where you're from. Loved it, it's more than worth the drive and it's especially suited for those occasional day hikers out there.

Good way to see the depth of the natural first including some millenarian cedars without heavy hiking. It's good if you have younger kids or can't hike for multiple hours in the forest

Beautiful park, very well signaged with various routes depending on duration and level of fitness. We were advised to do the 50min instead of 80 as the latter was slippery due to rain. Keep your ticket as it includes ¥200 yen discount for Shiratani unsuikyo. But really, its not much to pay to preserve this paradise.
