Yakusugi Land is a beautiful nature park on Yakushima Island in Japan. It's famous for its ancient Yakusugi cedars, some of which are over 1,000 years old. The park is a great place to see these giant trees up close. It has well-marked trails, making it easy for visitors to explore the forest.

The park is known for its rich biodiversity. You can find unique plants and animals, such as the Yakushima macaque and the Yaku deer. The air is fresh and cool, thanks to the dense forest canopy. The park offers several hiking courses, ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes, catering to all fitness levels.

The "Wilson's Stump," a giant hollowed-out tree stump, is one of the park's main attractions. You can even stand inside it! The park's scenery changes with the seasons, offering different experiences throughout the year.

What other travelers are saying about Yakusugi Land

Great place with trails for all levels. Was great for me as I ruptured my ACL skiing a month ago, so had to stay away from the steeper unpaved trails but still had a lovely experience. Carpark wasn’t large although it wasn’t crowded so managed to park. Had a resthouse at the entrance with gift shop and decent toilets ¥100 donation

Yakusugi Land is a natural forest park located, featuring ancient Yakusugi cedar trees, many over 1,000 years old. What I liked was the range of hiking trails—from easy 30-minute walks to longer 3-hour treks. The trails are well-maintained and wind through lush, mossy forests filled with old-growth cedars, fallen logs, and diverse plant life. Two buses travel to the park entrance, starting at Gochomae stop 62.

This is a must. You have to drive up a very windy road to get here but well worth it. Just wow. There is something for everyone. You can do a short walk or longer. The short walks have boardwalks and lots of steps. Just breath taking. There is a gift shop also.

Absolutely amazing, best first experience in Yakushima, the 150 minutes path is a REAL princess mononoke style experience, way more than the Shiratani Unsui Gorge trail. Don't miss it.

Cool hike in a moss-covered wonderland! Choose from different trail lengths / difficulty. We arrived in the afternoon in late December, and did the 80 min hike with the whole trail to ourselves. Definitely recommend proper waterproof trekking shoes/boots with solid grip (you can rent them cheaply on the island) and waterproof jacket. If you do the 30-50 minute routes you might be able to get away with trail runners as long as they have very good grip…but wouldn’t suggest normal sneakers (it will be slippery). Trails are very well maintained. 80-150 min trail isn’t very strenuous but gets technical with lots of somewhat sketchy / steep wooden stairs and planks. Wouldn’t recommend if you have mobility issues. Make sure to grab a free hiking pole at the entrance!
