The Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center is a fantastic complement to the Yakusugi Museum. While the museum focuses on the island's history and cedar logging, the Conservation Center explains why Yakushima was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and highlights the importance of protecting its unique ecosystems.
The exhibitions are modern, informative, and beautifully presented, covering the island's ancient forests, wildlife, climate, and ongoing conservation efforts. The scale models, interactive displays, and excellent photography help visitors understand the incredible biodiversity of Yakushima before heading into the mountains.
Admission is free, making it an easy recommendation for anyone visiting the island. It's especially worthwhile before hiking Shiratani Unsuikyo or the Jōmon Sugi trail, as it gives valuable context that makes the experience in the forest even more rewarding.
Friendly staff, well-maintained facilities, and plenty of information in English make this an essential stop for nature lovers. Even if you only spend 30–45 minutes here, you'll leave with a much deeper appreciation of one of Japan's most remarkable natural treasures.
Worth visiting to learn more about the island and cedar trees. It does not take up too much time around 30mins to enjoy the displays and read the information. Plus you can get a cool little key chain as a reward for watching a video on the dos and don'ts for the island like not feeding animals and how to manage rubbish/toilets on longer treks.
Very interesting visit, with a lot of thorough explanations on cedar tree implantation & development on the island.... and very helpful staff too....

Beautiful small free exposition, and the staff is super lovely! Worth to visit. The Yakushugi museum is 5 min away by foot.
