The Yakusugi Museum is situated on Yakushima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is accessible from Miyanoura, the main town on the island.
The museum is about a 50-minute drive from Yakushima Airport. You can take a taxi, rent a car, or use public transport to reach the museum.
Most visitors spend about 1.5 to 2 hours at the museum. However, if you’re interested in detailed exhibits or participating in a guided tour, you might want to allocate more time.
Yes, the Yakusugi Museum has a parking lot for visitors. Parking is generally free, but it can fill up quickly during peak times, so arriving early is recommended.
Small but neat museum. Shoes off (required) so you get to feel the unique wood tile floor. Took about an hour to get through everything, and there is an English guidebook you can borrow freely that has translations of the exhibits.
Maybe not a must see but worth a visit. The exhibits are in Japanese but you can use a free museum guide that translates most (but not all) the text. However the visit was worth it for me to do the “stamp rally” with the neighbouring two sites - a three colour stamp (one colour from each place). The floor is also interesting to walk on and you do learn about the history of the trees/wood.
A complex containing a museum of Yakushima cedar logging, conservation centre, cafe and a small park.
The museum has a lovely atmosphere the entire interior appears to be done in cedar tiling. Several interactive pieces and videos showing the history of Yakushima's wood + a temporary exhibition hall (there was a photography contest for next year's calendar when I went). Small gift shop with books, postcards and wooden goods.
Didn't have time to get anything from the cafe but the interior is lovely!
A good place if you want to know the history and learn about the cedar trees and the past wood cutting business of the island. There is also a part of Jomon Sugi preserved here, with all the possible explanation and research showcased about the same. Nearby areas are peaceful and good for a walk.
Lose cedar tiles floor, not common & genuine, nice idea & very pleasant.
Well documented geological origin of Yakushima & its gorgeous, luxurious cedar forest, Kamis' real gift....
