Mt Komaki, Aichi

Mount Komaki stands 86 meters high in the city of Komaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The mountain's base stretches nearly 600 meters from east to west and 400 meters from north to south, covering approximately 21 hectares. This modest elevation belies its significant role in Japanese military history and its current status as a popular historical park.

The original Komakiyama Castle was built by Oda Nobunaga in 1563 as a strategic base for his campaign to conquer Mino Province to the north. After successfully securing the region by 1567, Nobunaga relocated to Gifu Castle and abandoned Komakiyama. The castle gained renewed importance in 1584 during the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, when Tokugawa Ieyasu occupied and expanded the vacant fortress as his headquarters in the conflict against Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Following the battle's resolution, the castle was again abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.

Today, the mountain functions as a historical park showcasing various castle ruins including water wells and stone walls. The reconstructed castle tower, built in 1967 and modeled after Kyoto's Hiunkaku Pavilion, houses the Komakiyama Historical Museum, which reopened with renovated exhibitions in 2023. The museum displays exhibits on the area's history and culture, with particular focus on the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute and artifacts from the Sengoku period. Visitors can explore earthwork fortifications and remnants of the castle's defensive structures throughout the forested mountain.

The mountain is particularly renowned for its cherry blossoms, with over 1,150 trees of approximately ten varieties blooming each spring. The northern slopes feature naturally occurring Machilus thunbergii trees, unique to this location in the surrounding area. From the summit observatory, visitors enjoy panoramic views across the Nobi Plains, including nearby Nagoya Airport and distant mountain ranges.

The museum charges 100 yen for adults, while junior high school students and younger enter free. This ticket also grants access to the Komakiyama Castle Historical Site Information Center (Rekishiru Komaki) at the mountain's base. From Sakae Station in Nagoya, take the Meijo Subway Line to Heian-dori Station, transfer to the Meitetsu Komaki Line to Komaki Station, then walk approximately 15 minutes to the mountain. The trail to the summit requires roughly 20 minutes of walking through wooded paths. Free parking is available at the mountain's base for those arriving by car.
