Yurigahara Park is a peaceful floral paradise in Sapporo, beautifully known for its lilies, tulips, roses, lavender, and seasonal cherry blossoms. What fascinated me most was how differently spring unfolds in Hokkaido compared to Tokyo.
While Tokyo’s flower season had already faded, Sapporo still felt fully immersed in spring beauty.
The park is easy to reach from central Sapporo. Visitors can take the JR Gakuen-Toshi Line to Yurigahara Station, followed by a short walk to the entrance. It can also be accessed by subway and local bus routes, making it a convenient and relaxing day trip.
For just ¥600, I purchased the combined ticket which included access to the World Gardens, the greenhouse conservatory, and the charming Lily Train that slowly circles through the vast gardens.
One of the most unique features of Yurigahara Park is its “World Garden,” created to celebrate Sapporo’s friendship with its sister cities around the world. The park includes themed gardens inspired by cities such as Portland (USA), Munich (Germany), and Shenyang (China), making it feel like a quiet cultural journey through flowers and nature.
The Portland Garden especially caught my attention with its peaceful simplicity and touching story of friendship between the two cities. Another fascinating feature was the preserved old silo, once used by a local dairy farmer and later transformed into an observation tower a beautiful reminder of the area’s rural history.
The atmosphere of the park felt extremely family and child-friendly. Open wooden resting pavilions were scattered throughout the gardens where many elderly visitors quietly sat admiring the scenery, reflecting Japan’s calm and slow garden culture.
The park also offers wheelchair rental facilities, accessible restrooms, and warmly welcomes dogs on leash and cyclists. Locals gather here for picnics, family outings, and peaceful moments surrounded by nature.
By the end of my visit, Yurigahara Park no longer felt like just another flower garden. It felt like a place where history, international friendship, seasonal beauty, and everyday community life quietly come together in the heart of Hokkaido.
Nice park with lots of big trees and cute lollies train to check out the park. Best to go by taxi or driving. A bit hard for gaijin to travel but locals were every nice to show us around even the bus driver dropped us in front of the park🙏😍

A fantastic, genuine botanical garden with an incredible variety of flowers! It is a beautiful public park located just a short trip from Sapporo Station. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves unique or rare plant species that you rarely see in traditional flower gardens. A huge highlight is their amazing alpine rock garden, which features a massive variety of rare alpine flowers from the mountains. Definitely worth a visit!
