Mount Yari

Dominating the skyline of Japan's Northern Alps, Mount Yari, or Yariga-take, is a testament to nature's grandeur. Rising to an impressive 3,180 meters, this iconic peak is often compared to the Matterhorn of the Swiss Alps due to its spear-like shape.

Hikers worldwide are drawn to its challenging trails and breathtaking vistas. The journey to the summit offers an immersive experience through lush forests, alongside serene rivers, and past ancient temples.

Notably, the mountain is home to diverse wildlife, including the Japanese serow and elusive ptarmigan, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Reaching the peak is not for the faint-hearted; the climb involves navigating rocky terrains and steep ascents, with the final push to the summit requiring ladders and chains.

However, the panoramic views from the top, where one can even glimpse Mount Fuji on a clear day, are a reward. Mount Yari promises an unforgettable adventure if you're an experienced mountaineer seeking your next conquest or a nature lover eager to explore Japan's alpine beauty.

Gear up and witness one of Japan's most revered natural landmarks.

I hiked Mount Yari starting early from Kamikōchi, spent the first night at Yarisawa Lodge, and continued the next day up to Yarigatake Sanso Lodge. From there, I climbed to the peak and spent the night at the lodge before descending all the way down to Shinhotaka Onsen the next day. Although the route is well-marked and generally accessible, it became more challenging on the way back (especially since many of the mountain huts were closed during my visit. The final section to the summit is steep and exposed, requiring full focus. It’s not technically difficult, but it is dangerous: you must keep both hands on the chains and ladders at all times, and take each step carefully. Helmets can be rented at the lodge for ¥500 (around €3.00) and are highly recommended for this section. Still, it was an incredible experience: the views are breathtaking, the trail is safe if you go prepared, and the sense of isolation at the top is unique. Highly recommend this route to anyone in good physical shape and looking for an unforgettable adventure in the Japanese Alps. Photos on Instagram: @edddaie

I have been doing hiking for few years now. This is the best hike I have had as of now. The path reminded of Hobbit habitat. When you are reaching to campsite just below peak, every step is beautiful yet difficult to climb. Peak: We ascended peak in morning and weather is good. It is not as scary as looks before climbing. It adventurous and scary to react the summit but the view is worth it.
