Yakushiike Park

Yakushiike Park is located in Machida City, Tokyo, centered around a natural pond that has served as a crucial water source for the surrounding agricultural communities since the Edo period (1603-1868). The pond was originally created as an irrigation reservoir and takes its name from a nearby Yakushi temple, reflecting the area's deep connection to local Buddhist traditions and farming heritage.

The park encompasses 53.8 hectares of preserved natural landscape, featuring the main pond surrounded by walking trails, wetlands, and diverse plant communities. The area serves as an important habitat for migratory waterfowl and supports over 200 species of birds throughout the year, making it a designated wildlife sanctuary within the Tokyo metropolitan area. The park's ecological significance extends to its role as a green corridor connecting larger natural areas in western Tokyo.

Visitors can explore 4 kilometers of well-maintained walking paths that circle the pond and branch into surrounding woodlands. The park offers excellent birdwatching opportunities from several observation decks, with binoculars available for rent at the visitor center. Photography enthusiasts frequent the park for its scenic pond reflections and wildlife shots, while families enjoy the playground areas and picnic facilities near the main entrance.

Spring brings cherry blossoms that bloom along the northern shore in early April, creating popular hanami spots. Summer features lush green foliage and active bird life, though mosquito repellent is recommended. Autumn transforms the park with vibrant maple and ginkgo colors peaking in mid to late November. Winter offers the clearest views across the pond and the best opportunities to observe wintering waterfowl species from December through February.

The park opens daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM with free admission. Access the park via JR Yokohama Line to Machida Station, then take the Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu bus bound for Yakushiike Park, alighting at the Yakushiike-mae stop after a 15-minute ride. The visitor center provides maps, bird identification guides, and seasonal information in Japanese and basic English. Parking is available for 200 vehicles at 300 yen per day.
