Experience the art of Japanese calligraphy in a 150-year-old townhouse in Kyoto’s historic Ninenzaka district. Learn brush techniques, write kanji, and create your own artwork with guided instruction in a traditional setting.

  • Bare feet and bare legs are not permitted inside the venue.

  • Please avoid wearing strong perfumes or scented products.

  • Food and drinks are not allowed, except water.

Tea Ceremony & Cultural Experience Kangetsu Kyoto
349-19 Masuyachō, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto

Arrive at Kangetsu Kyoto in Ninenzaka, located at the end of a narrow alley to the left of Starbucks Coffee Kyoto Ninenzaka Yasaka Chaya. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure a smooth start to your experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the class is offered in both Japanese and English, so you can easily follow along regardless of your language background. Other languages may be available upon request in advance.

Please wear socks (or purchase them on-site if needed), wear clothes that can get stained with ink, and bring reading glasses if required. You may also want a bag or case to carry your completed scroll (a basic protective sleeve is provided).

No, the kimono is not included in the standard experience. However, a simple two-piece kimono rental is available on-site for an additional fee if you'd like to enhance your cultural experience.

Photos are welcome and encouraged during the class. However, video recording of the instructor’s demonstration is not permitted to protect the teaching method and ensure a smooth flow for all guests.

All calligraphy tools and materials, including ink, paper, and brushes, are provided.
