Participants will have the chance to create their own calligraphy piece on a Shikishi, a special paper board used for calligraphy, and take it home as a meaningful souvenir. The experience is designed for both beginners and those familiar with calligraphy, offering a memorable and educational activity.

Essentials to Know Before Booking

  • If ink gets on your clothes, it will be difficult to remove, so please come in clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. (Apron rental available)

  • A 100% cancellation fee applies if canceled on the day of the event.

  • The experience lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • Participants must be at least 7 years old.

  • All necessary tools and materials are included.

  • The activity is easy and suitable for all skill levels.

Workshop Agenda

Welcome and Introduction

Duration: 5 minutes

Upon arrival, you will be seated with all the required tools prepared. Then you'll be greeted by the Shodo expert, who will introduce you to the Japanese writing culture and calligraphy.

Demonstration of Instructor

Duration: 5 minutes

The teacher will start out by writing the kanji as a demonstration. You will then start by at how the characters are written using a brush. You will also learn the meaning of each kanji.

Practicing basic strokes

Duration: 15 minutes

We start with making the black ink before the practice begins. This stage is very important to calm the mind and improve your concentration.

Creating Your Calligraphy Artwork

Duration: 25 minutes

Using the skills you've practiced, you will try your hand at creating your favorite characters. You can choose anything from names, favorite things, favorite words etc.

The instructor will then write a sample so you can practice while looking at their work. Once you've practiced enough, try making artwork on Shikishi.

You can try the Shikishi three times. The instructor will provide personalized feedback and assistance to help you complete your artwork.

Souvenir and Farewell

Duration: 10 minutes

At the end of the session, you'll have the opportunity to take photos with your finished calligraphy piece. You can take a commemorative photo wearing the haori. The artwork is placed in a Japanese-style case that can be hung on the wall. We will prepare this for you and you can then take it home as a unique souvenir.
