Do I wear armor while cutting with the real sword?

Not in the standard program. Cutting with a real sword while wearing armor is a separate option, offered through the General's March-Out Experience.

Can family members watch?

Yes. Family and friends are welcome to come along and observe at no charge.

Is there armor for women and children?

Yes. The dojo also carries armor in children's and women's sizes.

Why does the instructor stress the sword's weight?

Old swordsmanship texts teach that a cut should come from the sword's weight and speed. Forcing it with your arms turns the blade at an angle.

Rise Plan: Samurai Sword and Armor Training in Osaka

Train like a samurai in Osaka with a real-sword test cut and a turn in authentic armor. You change into dogi and hakama, practice iai basics with a master, cut rolled straw with a genuine katana, and then suit up in armor for photos.

Arrive 30 minutes early to change clothes and hear the precautions.
Participants must be at least 6 years old.
The operator rates the program challenging, as sword and armor work is physical.
Armor sizes generally suit heights up to 185 cm and weights up to 100 kg.
Wear an undershirt or short-sleeved T-shirt and underwear under your training wear.
Bring a spare T-shirt and water for after the sword and armor training.
Never draw a sword unless the instructor gives permission.
Guests who have drunk alcohol beforehand cannot take part.
The dojo is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

Not recommended for travelers with back problems, heart conditions, or pregnancy.
