西大寺位于奈良，是一处具有深厚历史与文化意义的地点。其名称意为“西大寺”，与更为著名的“东大寺”相对应。西大寺由圣武天皇于公元765年创建，最初作为一系列祈愿国家与统治者安宁的佛教寺院网络的一部分而建。

与许多以华丽装饰吸引游客的寺庙不同，西大寺以其朴素之美和寺院中弥漫的深沉宁静而别具特色。寺院建筑群包含多座具有重要历史价值的建筑，其中大殿与讲堂被指定为日本的重要文化财产。这些建筑是日本宗教建筑的优秀代表，让人得以一窥日本历史时期的艺术与精神生活。

西大寺还因举办日本最独特、最热闹的祭典之一——西大寺会阳（也称“裸祭”）而闻名。每年二月，成千上万只穿兜裆布的男子参与激烈的争夺，试图抢到由僧侣抛出的两根被认为能带来一年幸福的神木。
