The lake formed over 100,000 years ago after a massive volcanic eruption. It’s a caldera lake, meaning it sits in the hollow left by the collapsed volcano. The area still has active geothermal features, including hot springs and volcanic craters.

There’s plenty to do! You can take a relaxing boat cruise around the lake, hike the trails near Mount Usu, explore the Nishiyama Crater area, or soak in the hot springs at Toyako Onsen. Water activities like kayaking are also popular in summer, and the winter offers snowshoeing with scenic views.

Local specialties include fresh seafood from nearby waters, wagyu beef, and dishes like Hokkaido-style ramen. Many hotels and ryokans serve multi-course meals (kaiseki) with seasonal ingredients, and you can also enjoy snacks from the small shops in Toyako Onsen.

Lake Toya is known for its nightly fireworks from late April to October. There’s also the Lake Toya Long-Run Fireworks Festival and seasonal events, like winter light displays and spring cherry blossom festivals, making it a lively destination year-round.
