Playa de Naminoue, Naha

Última actualización 16 may 2026

Naminoue Beach is located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, positioned directly below the historic Naminoue Shrine on a clifftop overlooking the East China Sea. The beach is situated in the Wakasa district of central Naha, making it the most accessible beach in Okinawa's capital city. The name "Naminoue" translates to "above the waves," referencing the shrine's dramatic position above the shoreline. The area has served as a coastal site for centuries, with modern development as a managed public beach occurring during the latter half of the 20th century, including safety facilities and seasonal lifeguard services.

The beach holds cultural significance through its connection with Naminoue Shrine, Okinawa's most important Shinto shrine and historically one of the Ryukyu Eight Shrines that protected the Ryukyu Kingdom. The shrine, established over 700 years ago, sits atop the coral limestone cliff directly above the beach, creating a distinctive spiritual landscape. The beach stretches approximately 200 meters, featuring white sand and clear shallow waters.

Visitors can swim in designated safe zones during the supervised season, typically April through October. The beach provides changing facilities, showers, restrooms, and equipment rentals including beach umbrellas and snorkeling gear. Shallow, calm waters suit families with children. Snorkeling near rocky areas reveals tropical fish. The beach offers views of ships entering Naha Port. Visitors can climb stone steps to Naminoue Shrine for elevated coastal views and cultural exploration. The surrounding Wakasa area contains restaurants and shops.

Access Naminoue Beach from Naha Airport by taxi (approximately 15 minutes) or via Okinawa Monorail (Yui Rail) to Asahibashi Station or Kencho-mae Station, then 15-20 minute walk or short bus ride. From Kokusai Street, the beach is about 20-30 minutes on foot. Local buses serve Wakasa with stops near the beach. Limited paid parking available. Beach admission is free.
