Eigenji Temple was founded in 1361 during the Nanboku-cho period when Sasaki Ujiyori, the lord of Omi Province, invited Zen Master Jakushitsu Genko to be its founding abbot and constructed the temple buildings. It is the head temple of the Eigenji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.
As you climb the stone steps leading to the temple, the Aichi River is on your right, and on the cliff face to your left are stone statues of the Sixteen Arhats. Passing through the temple gate, you'll find various buildings within the grounds, including a bell tower, abbot's quarters, lecture hall, and Zen hall. It's a larger and more impressive temple than I had imagined.
