Hyotan Sakura Park
Hyotan Sakura Park in Niyodogawa Town, Kochi Prefecture, is home to one of Shikoku's most remarkable natural monuments. The park's centerpiece is the Hyotan Sakura, a 500-year-old Edo Higan cherry tree designated as a Natural Monument by Kochi Prefecture. Standing 21 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 6 meters, this ancient giant dominates the landscape against a backdrop of mountain peaks in the upper reaches of the crystal-clear Niyodo River.
The tree derives its name from the distinctive gourd-shaped buds characteristic of the Hyotan variety, which bulge spherically when viewed from the side. During peak blooming season from late March to early April, the massive tree becomes a focal point for hanami celebrations, attracting visitors who gather beneath its branches for traditional cherry blossom viewing. The park grounds feature a promenade for leisurely walks, and the surrounding hillsides burst into color with complementary seasonal flowers including shibazakura (moss phlox) and bright yellow rapeseed blossoms that carpet the area.
The site offers excellent photography opportunities with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, traditional farmhouses, and rural landscapes. During hanami season, the park's atmosphere becomes particularly lively as food stalls line the promenade, creating a festive environment. The hilly terrain requires an uphill walk to reach the tree, adding to the sense of discovery upon encountering this towering specimen standing among numerous other cherry trees in the park.
Access by car is the most practical option from Kochi City. For those using public transportation, take the JR Dosan Line from Kochi to Sakawa Station (approximately 30 minutes), then transfer to the Sakawa Kawado Line bus toward Niyodogawa, alighting at Tosa Osaki bus stop after about 30 minutes. From there, expect roughly an hour's hike uphill to reach the tree. The park is open 24 hours with free admission.
